Description

The Canadian Light Source Inc. (CLSI) is a national research facility of the University of Saskatchewan. CLS produces very bright light to explore the nature and structure of molecules and serves national and international users from academia, industry, and government institutions.
CLSI is now accepting applications for a Laboratory Coordinator position within our Environmental and Earth Sciences department. The Laboratory Coordinator is responsible for the CLS Experimental Floor laboratories and work spaces, and ensures labs are maintained at a high standard to facilitate effective use of space, equipment and resources. The successful incumbent will ensure lab safety and compliance with CLSI policies, CLSI operating licence, and all applicable federal, provincial, and local regulations.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A relevant diploma or undergraduate degree.
  • A minimum of 3-5 years of relevant experience, including experience with radiological or biohazardous materials.
  • Experience maintaining, troubleshooting, and calibrating lab equipment.
  • Ability to develop and enforce standard operating procedures (SOPs).
  • Strong organizational and multitasking abilities to oversee multiple labs and workspaces.
  • Prior experience training and supervising lab personnel, students, or researchers would be an asset.
    Salary Range: The Salary Range is $69,880 - $94,544 and will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
    Remuneration: Remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. A comprehensive benefits package, including supplemental health and dental insurance, life insurance, a pension plan, and four weeks’ vacation, is part of a competitive compensation package.

Responsibilities
  • Maintains a comprehensive inventory of laboratories, laboratory equipment and portable electrochemistry and battery equipment. Laboratories integrated with beamlines (SyLMAND, BMIT) and major offline equipment intended for data collection (ie. SEM) are outside of the scope of this position.
  • Manages the inventory of supplies in the laboratories and works collaboratively with Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) staff to ensure appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is available and properly maintained.
  • Ensures that equipment is calibrated and operational at all times.
  • Oversees maintenance of laboratories and equipment, in collaboration with CLS staff and/or external providers. May occasionally coordinate maintenance on equipment residing at beamlines in consultation with beamline staff (ie microscopes).
  • Maintains Standard Operating Procedures and ensures the use and maintenance of equipment is properly logged and records are appropriately maintained.
  • Coordinates the scheduling and use of laboratory spaces and equipment following CLSI protocols.
  • Trains users and staff on the operation of laboratory equipment
  • Consults with HSE on technical and regulatory issues related to laboratory safety and works collaboratively with subject matter experts to identify, develop, and deliver training programs pertaining to lab safety.
  • Ensures unusual occurrences involving hazardous or potentially hazardous conditions are reported and assists in the investigation and response to reports; provides recommendations and/or takes appropriate action to mitigate potential safety, health, environmental, and security risks.
  • Supports audits/inspections by CLSI Occupational Health and Safety Committees, internal auditors, regulatory agencies and external reviewers on the effectiveness of the laboratory safety program and its associated management system on a regular basis.
  • Participates in project safety reviews with respect to proposed laboratory activities.
