JOB SUMMARY:

Dr. Meredith Tennis’ lab focuses on the investigation of early lung cancer development and lung cancer prevention using translational research approaches. Projects include work with in vitro models, in vivo models, and human samples, and often include interdisciplinary collaboration with scientists and clinicians. The preferred candidate will have significant rodent research experience, molecular and cellular biology research experience, general knowledge of cancer research, and enjoy supporting a team science environment. This position is in a small lab, where research professionals interact directly and often with the PI, have frequent opportunities to work with collaborators, have a high potential for authorship and presentations, and are supported in career development for future goals.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s degree in biology, molecular biology, chemistry, genetics, or related field.
  • Four (4) years of experience in an experimental or wet laboratory.
  • Experience managing mouse models of cancer.
  • Experience with mammalian cell culture and molecular biology techniques, including western blotting, PCR, and transfection.
  • Experience optimizing or developing protocols.
  • Direct experience with rodent handling, procedures, and research projects.
  • Experience with laboratory rodent handling and husbandry.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Advanced knowledge of laboratory techniques including safety procedures and techniques.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution.
  • Outstanding customer service skills.
  • Knowledge of basic human anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
  • Ability to interpret and master complex research protocol information.
  • Knowledge of pulmonary or cancer science.
  • Proficiency with Prism software.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with and support Principal Investigators (PI), laboratory team, and other stakeholders with laboratory and research functions.
  • Meet weekly with immediate lab group to review research design and progress.
  • Conduct procedures and provide care for mouse research studies, ensuring compliance with protocols and institutional regulations.
  • Utilize a variety of laboratory techniques for research projects, including nucleic acid isolation from mouse and human tissues and cells, cell culture and harvesting, western blotting, polymerase chain reactions, histologic processing and staining, transfection and transduction, plasmid prep, luciferase, cell phenotype assays, and precision cut lung slice models.
  • Maintain detailed records of experiments and collect and analyze data using MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Prism, and Lab Archives.
  • Support daily lab operations, including ordering and stocking materials, maintaining equipment, safety, cleanliness, waste disposal, and related areas.
  • Provide support researching issues and developing recommendations to resolve technical or administrative issues.
  • Assist in the review and implementation of lab support policies, practices, and programs to meet organizational, operations and management needs.
  • Independently perform scientific literature searches and attend scientific seminars.
  • Contribute to manuscript preparation and grant applications.
  • Train new laboratory personnel and oversee students/trainees when needed.
  • Assist with other duties as assigned.
