JOB SUMMARY:

The Department of Neurology has an opening for a motivated full-time Research Services Professional (RSP) to work in the laboratory of Maria Nagel, PhD.
The lab is funded by grants from the National Institute of Health and philanthropic organizations and investigates alphaherpesvirus infections of the central nervous system. Current projects in the lab involve identifying mechanisms of virus-induced vascular disease, amyloidosis, aberrant inflammation, and immune suppression; as well as evaluating potential treatments for varicella zoster virus, herpes simplex virus, and Epstein-Barr virus infections. We are seeking an individual who is collaborative, communicative, detail-oriented, organized, proactive, able to think critically, focused on quality, dedicated to personal growth, and highly motivated. The position will be expected to work independently under the supervision of the Dr. Nagel but will also engage, communicate, and collaborate with various colleagues (e.g., principal investigators, neurology research staff, finance, and billing professionals, and regulatory team). The RSP is responsible for providing a high level of professionalism to both internal and external constituents that will maintain the positive image of the Department and University.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate to identify laboratory solutions
  • Collaborate to review, develop and implement new or modified laboratory techniques required for research projects
  • Assist Team Leads, Supervisors and/or management with creation and implementation of processes and procedures and quality improvement initiatives
  • Assist and train other team members (e.g. rotating college interns)Other duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience
  • Experience in neurovirology research
  • Prior experience or background within an experimental or wet lab
  • Experience in vascular biology research (including dissection of cerbebrovasculature from animal models)
  • Experience in human neuronal cell culture
  • Experience in preparation of formalin-fixed, paraffin embedded tissues, including microtome use
  • Experience in Immuno-hist and/or -cytochemistry
  • Experience in PCR and protein analysis
  • Experience in alphaherpesvirology laboratory

COMPETENCIES, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of basic laboratory techniques including safety procedures and techniques
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees at all levels throughout the institution

  • Knowledge of basic human anatomy (specifically neuroanatomy), physiology medical terminology
