GENERAL SUMMARY:

Responsible for specimen accessioning, specimen preparation, computer data entry and reporting, quality assurance surveys, routine laboratory assignments, and any other tasks assigned by the Director. Provides training to staff on accessioning policies/procedures and assists in developing related policies/procedures. Responsible for supply inventory reports/audits. Responsible for timely compliance with all Network programs and policies.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Biology or related science studies preferred.
  • Must participate in 7 hours of approved continuing education activities per year to maintain current knowledge and skills in the field.
  • Must accept assignment to any shift as determined by the director to be in the best interest of the laboratory’s duty to the patients.

Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs specimen accession procedures according to the Laboratory Procedures Manual.
  • Performs crosscheck of specimens accessioned by colleagues.
  • Distributes and stores specimens appropriately.
  • Contacts transplant programs and dialysis centers to follow-up on specimens with discrepancies.
  • Receives and responds to incoming requests by phone, fax, and/or email.
  • Provides training and guidance to new and existing staff on accessioning bench procedures.
  • Assists in the development and editing of accessioning policies/protocols.
  • Responsible for general accessioning supply inventory , including quarterly inventory audits.
  • Receives supplies, and places the supplies in appropriate storage areas.
  • Plans, implements, and reports at quarterly QA meetings on specified metrics.
  • Reads, understands and complies with Network and Laboratory policies and procedures, N.J., CAP, ASHI and UNOS regulations and standards.
  • Maintains equipment and facilities in a clean and orderly manner. Observes all Network and Laboratory safety precautions.
  • May assist with report prep to assist the specialists.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
