Summary Description Coordinates childbirth education in the outpatient setting. Develops, updates, coordinates and plans lactation education in the outpatient and inpatient settings in accordance with state and national standards. Participates in demonstrating fiscal responsibility. Plans and participates in the selection, orientation and instruction of lactation staff and coordinates daily work assignments by facilitating the delivery of services. Serves as a resource and liaison between lactation department and other related areas regarding departmental programs, policies and procedures. Collaborates with other healthcare team members, as well as, ancillary personnel, physicians, insurance reimbursers and community agencies. Plans, implements and evaluates in-service programs for interdisciplinary staff personnel; develops and maintains protocol/guidelines for the education and management of patients, providing for and assisting with instruction and clinical cases. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Bachelor’s degree in Nursing. License to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of Michigan. Five years experience working with postpartum and Ante partum patients and their infants. Two years demonstrated leadership experience coordinating education programs and work of others. Certification by the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiner (IBLCE). Skills Required 1. Analytical ability to identify opportunities for improvement, provide information and available resources, respond to patient and physician issues and concerns and ensure consistent quality patient care. 2. Communication and/or interpersonal skills to work productively with all levels of hospital personnel and to oversee the activities of a small group of personnel. Some discretion and conflict resolution skills are necessary. Courtesy and listening skills are required to communicate effectively with employees, patients and their families. 3. Ability to read and comprehend procedural and technical literature, as necessary. 4. Teaching abilities to conduct educational programs for staff, patients, families and community. 5. Leadership skills to direct others toward objectives that contribute to the success of the department. 6. Fiscal skills to monitor and control costs and revenue.
