OVERVIEW

We are seeking a land surveyor assistant, or survey technician to work in the field under the supervision of a licensed land surveyor or party chief to measure land boundaries and gather data for construction, mapping, and other projects. This entry-level role involves both physical and technical tasks

Duties and responsibilities

  • Assist the survey crew: Help with manual tasks such as clearing brush and trees, digging holes, and pounding stakes and rebar.
  • Operate and maintain equipment: Assist in setting up and operating surveying instruments like total stations, levels, GPS rovers, and data collectors.
  • Record data: Take accurate and detailed field notes, including measurements, distances, angles, benchmarks, and other observational data.
  • Staking: Place stakes and mark areas on the ground to provide guidance for construction teams.
  • Manage supplies: Transport and maintain all surveying equipment and tools to and from job sites.
  • Follow safety protocols: Adhere to all safety guidelines and procedures, as the job involves working outdoors in varying weather and terrain.

Skills and qualifications

  • Education: A high school diploma or GED is preferred but not necessary. On the job Training for this position is available.
  • Mathematical skills: Basic understanding of mathematics.
  • Technical aptitude: Ability to learn and operate surveying tools and equipment, as well as computer-aided design (CAD) software for more advanced assistants.
  • Physical stamina: Must be able to perform physically demanding work outdoors, including walking long distances over uneven terrain, and be able to lift and carry heavy equipment.
  • Work ethic: Successful assistants are reliable, attentive to detail, and able to follow instructions precisely.
  • Communication: Strong verbal and written communication skills for taking clear field notes and coordinating with the survey crew.
  • Problem-solving: Ability to think critically and identify potential issues in the field.
  • Licenses: A valid driver’s license is often required to travel to different job site
