Description
MTSI is seeking to hire a Laser Engineer to join a high performing and dynamic team supporting the development of high-fidelity physics-based models/simulations, sensor data collection and analysis, and other hardware testing/analysis to anchor system and phenomenology models/simulations. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with a team to assist in developing physics-based models/simulations, executing hardware tests/data collects, and applying data analysis to verify the performance of models. Models/simulations will address photonics/optics phenomenology and applications for lasers, sensors/detectors, and light-material interactions. Testing activities include design and implementation of laboratory-based and/or field-based setups for characterizing sensors and laser systems, evaluating/testing prototype hardware performance, and/or investigating relevant optical phenomena. Other tasks may include concept and requirements development, design trades, independent performance assessment, and post-test data analysis. Required Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in engineering or physics with 10+ years of relevant experience, Master’s degree with 8+ years, or PhD with 6+ years. Active Security Clearance is required with the ability to get TS/SC Proficiency in programming languages and tools for developing simulations, analyzing data, and automating laboratory setups (Matlab, Simulink, C, C++, Python) Experience with software development for physics-based modeling and algorithm implementation. In-depth understanding of laser physics, including light-matter interactions, laser beam characteristics, and system-level applications in defense technologies. Experience with high-energy laser systems and their integration into larger systems. Expertise in modeling and analyzing laser beam propagation through various atmospheric conditions, including turbulence, absorption, and scattering effects. Familiarity with tools and techniques for mitigating atmospheric distortions. Knowledge of sensor technologies, including electro-optical (EO) and infrared (IR) systems, and their use in detecting and characterizing laser signals. Experience in sensor calibration, performance evaluation, and data collection. Proficiency in developing mid- to high-fidelity models and simulations for laser systems and subsystems used in Department of Defense (DoD) applications. Ability to validate models using experimental data and apply them to system performance assessments. Desired Qualifications: Experience performing optical alignment, calibration, and testing of laser systems and sensors. Familiarity with metrology tools and techniques for characterizing optical components. Proficiency in developing simulations that integrate multiple physical domains, such as thermal, mechanical, and optical phenomena. Experience with tools like COMSOL Multiphysics or similar platforms. Familiarity with tools and techniques for mitigating atmospheric distortions. Experience configuring and programming hardware for automated data acquisition and control. Familiarity with data acquisition systems, such as LabVIEW or similar platforms. #LI-JJ1
Responsibilities
The Laser Engineer will support the development of high-fidelity physics-based models and simulations, as well as hardware testing and analysis. Responsibilities include executing hardware tests, collecting data, and applying data analysis to verify model performance.
