REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • College Diploma in law (e.g., legal assistant, law clerk or paralegal)
  • 3-5 years of experience working as a law clerk in a law firm, government office or professional regulator, including experience working with administrative tribunals or courts
  • Experience drafting, editing, and preparing legal documents

Responsibilities

HOW WILL THIS ROLE SUPPORT OUR TEAM?

The Law Clerk provides legal assistance to support the legal team to manage case files and prepare for hearings and/or Tribunal proceedings. The incumbent also performs tracking and follow-up to ensure compliance with legal decisions.

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE (BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO)

  • Prepare, compile, format, index, organize, proofread, and write preliminary drafts of documentation (e.g., adjudication briefs, motion records, factums, drafts of pleadings, witness evidence forms, etc.) and disclosure.
  • Serve and file court and tribunal documents. This includes understanding process and document filing and electronic filing requirements.
  • Aid in scheduling and case tracking to ensure all actions, timelines and deadlines are met.
  • Administer compliance activities (e.g., monitor suspended licensees, verify client refunds are made, ensure compliance with conditions).
  • Track and record case status, case statistics, and service standards for the Department by adding information received from others to tracking worksheets.

THIS ROLE WILL SUPPORT OUR TEAM BY PROVIDING

  • Knowledge of legal and administrative law concepts, principles, and terminology, Federal Court Rules, as well as the ability to acquire knowledge of the College Act, regulations, By-laws, and Code of Professional Conduct
  • Time management and organizational skills to manage and prioritize competing priorities and deadlines
  • Interpersonal and stakeholder relationship management skills to interact professionally and respectfully with stakeholders (licensees, counsels, witnesses, etc.)
  • Written and verbal communication skills to prepare legal documentation and communicate with stakeholders about legal information and issues related to cases
  • Attention to detail to ensure accuracy and completeness of documents and materials
