Description

ABOUT US

The Centre for the Study of the Legacies of British Slave-ownership (LBS) is a world-renowned research centre tracing the impact of slave-ownership on the development of metropolitan Britain.
Research and analysis of slave-owners an important means of understanding the extent and the limits of slavery’s role in shaping British history and leaving lasting legacies that reach into the present. At the core of LBS’s work is a public database of c. 60,000 slave-owners in the British Empire in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The stories of enslaved men, women and children, however, are no less important. We expect in the next few years to extend our database to include biographical information on the hundreds of thousands of enslaved people who lived in the British Caribbean under British rule.
A commitment to the barrier-free sharing of historical information and to public engagement is central to LBS.
For more about the Centre, see https://www.ucl.ac.uk/lbs/project/context/.
