OVERVIEW

POSITION OVERVIEW

As the Lead Animal Care Assistant, you will work alongside the animal care team in all day-to-day shelter operations while taking the lead in coordinating tasks, mentoring staff and volunteers, and maintaining high standards of animal care and facility operations.
This hands-on supervisory role includes ensuring consistency in procedures, supporting communication across shifts, helping to manage workflow, and stepping in as the first point of contact for operational questions or challenges. You will be a key liaison between the animal care team and the Executive Director.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working in an animal shelter or similar environment.
  • Minimum 5 Years in supervisory experience
  • Proven ability to work independently and as a leader in a team setting.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Detail-oriented with strong time-management and organizational abilities.
  • Physically capable of lifting and working in a fast-paced, physically demanding environment.
  • Valid Class 5 BC driver’s license with a clean abstract.

Responsibilities
  • Perform all duties of an Animal Care Assistant, including feeding, cleaning, administering medication, and observing animal health and behavior.
  • Provide on-the-floor guidance and support to staff, volunteers, and fosters to ensure all protocols are followed and animals receive high-quality care.
  • Coordinate daily animal care tasks and help organize workflow to ensure timely completion of responsibilities across the shelter.
  • Monitor the condition of the facility and support routine cleaning, maintenance, and inventory tracking.
  • Support intake, adoption, and foster procedures by assisting with approvals, promotions, and public communication.
  • Report behavioral and medical concerns to the appropriate team members and assist with follow-ups.
  • Support onboarding of new team members and volunteers by providing practical, in-the-moment training and feedback.
  • Promote a positive and respectful team culture by modeling professionalism, accountability, and compassion.
