A Day in the Life As the Lead Blacksmith, you'll start your day reviewing priorities, coordinating with your team, and preparing materials and equipment for upcoming projects. Throughout the day, you'll: Forge, shape, repair, and finish metal products using traditional blacksmithing techniques Create custom tools, hardware, and specialty metal components Operate anvils, hammers, grinders, welders, and other fabrication equipment Train and mentor junior blacksmiths on proper techniques and safety practices Review project specifications and blueprints Inspect finished products for quality, precision, and craftsmanship Troubleshoot forging and fabrication challenges Ensure work is completed safely and efficiently Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas Collaborate with leadership to meet production goals and quality standards No two days are exactly alike, making this an ideal role for someone who enjoys problem-solving, craftsmanship, and leading by example. This position is responsible for leading a team of blacksmiths, maintaining high-quality workmanship, ensuring safety compliance, and supporting operational efficiency within the facility. The ideal candidate is a skilled blacksmith with leadership experience, a strong work ethic, and a passion for mentoring others while producing exceptional work. Requirements Required Qualifications Must-Have Requirements Minimum 3 years of hands-on blacksmithing experience Previous leadership, supervisory, or mentoring experience Strong blacksmithing, forging, and metalworking skills Experience using traditional blacksmithing tools and equipment Welding and metal joining experience Knowledge of metal types, properties, and heat treatment processes Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings Strong attention to detail and commitment to craftsmanship High school diploma or equivalent Ability to lift up to 50 pounds Ability to stand, bend, and work in a physically demanding environment for extended periods Preferred Qualifications Formal blacksmithing training, apprenticeship, or certification MIG, TIG, or Stick welding experience Manufacturing, fabrication, or custom metalworking experience Experience developing and training apprentices Experience using Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) Skills & Competencies Leadership and team development Forging and fabrication expertise Welding and metal joining techniques Blueprint reading and interpretation Problem-solving and troubleshooting Time management and organization Strong communication skills Attention to detail Commitment to workplace safety Continuous improvement mindset Essential Responsibilities Leadership & Team Development Lead, supervise, and support blacksmith personnel Train and mentor junior blacksmiths and apprentices Guide techniques, craftsmanship, and safety practices Promote teamwork and accountability Assist with workflow planning and project execution Blacksmithing & Fabrication Forge, shape, bend, and finish metal components Create and repair custom tools, hardware, and specialty products Perform welding, soldering, brazing, and metal joining operations Measure, cut, trim, and prepare materials to specification Interpret blueprints, drawings, and work instructions Inspect finished products to ensure quality standards are met Troubleshoot issues during fabrication and forging processes Safety & Equipment Maintenance Follow and enforce all safety policies and procedures Ensure proper PPE usage Maintain blacksmithing tools and equipment Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of workstations Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment Work Environment This role is performed in an industrial shop environment and requires the ability to work in: Hot temperatures Noisy conditions Physically demanding environments Fast-paced production settings Successful candidates take pride in their craftsmanship, enjoy hands-on work, and are committed to producing high-quality results while helping others succeed.
