We are looking to strengthen our Clean water project team with a Lead Commissioning Engineer, site based in Burham.
A Lead Commissioning Engineer on water supply projects plays a pivotal role in ensuring that water treatment and distribution systems are installed, tested, and optimized to meet operational standards and regulatory requirements. This position is critical in transitioning a water supply project from construction to operational status, ensuring systems work safely, efficiently, and reliably before being handed over to operators. The Lead Engineer should lead a team of Commissioning Engineers to ensure that each project milestone is successfully achieved.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Review and develop CMDP commissioning plans, schedules, and procedures tailored to the specific requirements of water supply systems, integrating package plant, pumping stations, process streams, and bespoke treatment solutions.
  • Provide consultation into resourcing requirements and provide knowledge into the organisational structure of the team.
  • Coordinate with project teams, including design, construction, and operational teams, to ensure a smooth transition through the commissioning phases.
  • Review of design deliverables, including FDS, equipment and instrument lists, P&IDs, control philosophy and telemetry requirements.
  • Define commissioning milestones and manage timelines to align with the overall project schedule.
  • Lead the inspection and verification of equipment and systems to confirm that they are installed according to Statutory Requirements, design specifications, MED’s, WIME’s and manufacturer guidelines.
  • Conduct and oversee testing procedures for various systems, such as pressure testing, functional tests, and performance assessments for pumps, valves, control systems, and treatment units.
  • Oversee the sign off FAT and SAT, and process witness tests.
  • Conduct visual routine works site checks including security, safety, and housekeeping; report hazards and/or take appropriate action to resolve.
  • Monitor water processes using process control equipment for example, SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition system), to identify issues and trends.
  • Respond to process alarms generated via telemetry (problem notification); identify the issue remotely or on site, rectify issue or escalate.
  • Identify and report asset faults; use the escalation process to report any issues and concerns.
  • Monitor trends and respond with remedial action; use the escalation process to report any issues and concerns.
  • Engage with internal and external customers for example, contractors, regulators, colleagues visiting the site.
  • Apply hygiene procedures and Energy and Utilities Skills Register (EUSR) standards to clean water operations.
  • Prepare data and reports to present during meetings, collating information in line with the SW Commissioning and Testing Standards manual.
  • Maintain a high level of communication with SW Operators and Site owners.
  • Assist with the development, planning, and delivery of SCO’s (Safe Control of Operations).
  • Assist with the delivery and execution of the client requirements in the Projects WQRA (Water Quality Risk Assessment).
  • Provide updates for the Site Operating Manual and Assist O&M Coordinators in compilation and review of O&M Manuals.
  • Ensure that commissioning activities comply with industry standards, environmental regulations, and local authority guidelines.
  • Develop and maintain commissioning documentation and records to demonstrate compliance and quality assurance throughout the commissioning process.
  • Liaise with regulatory authorities and other stakeholders as necessary to obtain approvals or inspections.
  • Attend / Chair Progress & Commissioning Meetings providing suitable presentations.
  • Distribute Commissioning Log / Daily Diary’s and any other information from Engineers.
  • Assist with the career development of any Apprentice, Trainee or Assistant commissioning Engineers.
  • Work with the digital creations team to ensure the Commissioning approach can be visualised.
