The Lead, Digital Health Standards plays a pivotal role in shaping and executing Ontario Health’s strategy for digital health interoperability. This role leads the development, implementation, and maintenance of digital health standards—including data exchange, representation, and terminology standards—to support both direct patient care and secondary data use across the health system.
Working closely with internal teams and external partners, the Lead provides expert guidance on standards such as HL7® messaging, HL7® FHIR®, IHE profiles, SNOMED CT, and Regenstrief terminology. This role ensures alignment with provincial and national strategies, drives adoption, and supports governance and implementation of standards-based solutions.
Here is what you will be doing:
- Lead the execution of Ontario Health’s Digital Health Standards strategy and contribute to broader digital priorities.
- Define and refine standards-related strategies, policies, and governance frameworks aligned with provincial, national, and international best practices.
- Provide subject matter expertise and leadership to specialists and cross-functional teams in the selection, development, and implementation of health informatics standards.
- Offer advisory services to internal and external stakeholders to support health information exchange initiatives and interoperability goals.
- Build and manage relationships with system stakeholders to promote standards adoption and governance.
- Champion digital health standards across the sector, influencing industry direction and vendor roadmaps.
- Oversee the implementation of standards through tools, mappings, and support processes, ensuring compliance with structural, semantic, and functional requirements.
- Represent Ontario Health in standards development organizations and professional affiliations.
- Stay current with emerging trends and practices in digital health standards and informatics.
- Lead the development of knowledge assets, tools, and products to support standards implementation across Ontario Health initiatives.
- Provide education and training to build capacity and ensure knowledge transfer within the organization and across the sector.
- Influence national and international standards development to reflect Ontario’s clinical and technical needs.
- Translate strategic and operational requirements into published standards specifications and compliance frameworks.
Here is what you will need to be successful:
Education and Experience:
- Undergraduate degree in Information Management/Technology, Business/Clinical Administration, or a related field.
- Master’s degree in Health Informatics, Data Science, or equivalent experience (required).
- Professional certifications such as CHIMA or CPHIMS-CA, or relevant health discipline designations.
- Minimum 5+ years in a digital health or health informatics leadership role.
- 15+ years of experience in health IM/IT, standards development, and implementation of complex digital health systems.

- Proven experience in standards governance, adoption, and implementation.
- Expertise in standards development and maintenance at provincial, national, and international levels.
