About Bhuku Ltd
Bhuku Ltd is a specialist educational and consultancy provider committed to empowering marginalised and excluded learners through innovative, person-centred programmes in prison and community settings. We are known for delivering high-impact literacy, numeracy, mentoring, and employability programmes across secure establishments in England.
About the Role
We are seeking a passionate, organised and experienced Lead Tutor to coordinate and deliver high-quality literacy and numeracy support to learners at HMP Birmingham. This is a key role within our team, responsible for guiding participants to improve their foundational skills, develop confidence, and progress into further learning or employment.
You will be the sole on-site lead delivery specialist, supported remotely by our management and quality assurance team. You will also serve as the line supervisor for one Literacy and Numeracy Tutor, supporting their effective delivery of the programme and overseeing quality and learner progression.
This role plays a vital part in championing learning, supporting peer development, and ensuring a consistent, impactful learning journey for all participants.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver structured, small-group literacy and numeracy sessions, twice weekly (2 x full delivery days per week).
  • Facilitate a morning session (3.5 hrs) and afternoon session (2.5 hrs) on each delivery day.
  • Provide on-the-job training, refresher sessions, and self-directed learning resources to Peer Mentors within the prison.
  • Work closely with the prison’s education team, IAG staff, library, and resettlement services to maximise learner engagement and progression.
  • Provide ongoing line management and support to one additional Tutor delivering the same programme.
  • Monitor quality of delivery and outcomes across both staff and Peer Mentor contributions.
  • Input into learner assessments, maintain accurate records, and track learner progression.
  • Submit weekly reports, feedback and data as part of contract compliance.
  • Ensure delivery aligns with the Ofsted Education Inspection Framework (EIF), prison reading and learning strategies, and national learning standards.
