SUMMARY

The Lead Hand, Laboratory plays a critical role to the laboratory’s success, combining advanced technical skills with a strong focus on operational efficiency. This role is responsible for performing sample preparation and analytical testing, ensuring results are accurate, timely, and compliant with QA/QC standards. The Lead Hand, Laboratory supports the Supervisor, Lab in maintaining production targets, troubleshooting processes, optimizing workflows, and keeps the leadership team informed about lab operations. This role also includes, promoting a safe and productive work environment, ensuring equipment operates at peak performance, mentoring junior staff, and assisting continuous improvement in all lab activities.

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE & SKILLS

  • Diploma or degree in Chemistry, Laboratory Technology, or a related scientific field, highly desired.
  • Strong foundational scientific knowledge, particularly in analytical chemistry and mineral analysis.
  • Minimum 3–5 years of experience in an assay laboratory, preferably in a mining environment.
  • Proven experience in base metals and gold analysis using fire assay and instrumental techniques.
  • Previous supervisory or lead hand experience is an asset.
  • Proficiency in fire assay, ICP-OES, AAS, and wet chemistry techniques.
  • Familiarity with LIMS systems, especially AssayNet.
  • Competence in Microsoft Word and Excel for data reporting and documentation.
  • Skilled in equipment maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting analytical processes.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills for clear reporting and team coordination.
  • Good interpersonal skills to foster collaboration and mentor junior staff.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to work under pressure while maintaining high quality standards and meeting production targets.

Responsibilities

Analytical and Technical

  • Perform routine and advanced analytical procedures including fire assay, ICP-OES, AAS, and wet chemistry.
  • Conduct sample preparation and testing in accordance with established protocols.
  • Monitor and maintain laboratory equipment, ensuring calibration and maintenance schedules are followed.
  • Troubleshoot analytical issues and implement corrective actions to maintain data quality and workflow efficiency.

Quality Assurance and Compliance

  • Maintain strict adherence to QA/QC protocols and ensure data integrity.
  • Ensure all sample preparation and analytical procedures comply with safety, environmental, and industry standards.
  • Assist in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance lab performance and reliability.

Operational Oversight

  • Supervise and coordinate daily activities of lab technicians.
  • Ensure timely and accurate processing of ore and concentrate samples.
  • Support inventory management of lab supplies and reagents.
  • Collaborate with geology and metallurgy teams to meet operational needs.
  • Maintain production targets and communicate lab performance to leadership.

Leadership and Training

  • Mentor and train junior staff on lab procedures, safety protocols, and equipment use.
  • Lead toolbox meetings in the absence of the Lab Supervisor.
  • Serve as relief supervisor, taking responsibility for approvals, reporting, and other supervisory duties during the Lab Supervisor’s absence.
  • Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement within the lab.
  • Lead by example in maintaining high standards of professionalism and technical excellence.
