Description

Mirror NS, part of the Municipal Group of Companies, is responsible for operating and managing the only permitted non-recyclable waste processing and landfill site within the Halifax Regional Municipality.

POSITION SUMMARY:

We are seeking a dedicated and safety-focused Lead Hand to oversee day-to-day operations of our Landfill. Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Lead Hand will lead a team of operators and labourers to ensure efficient processing of materials while maintaining high standards of safety, quality, and productivity.

QUALIFICATIONS:

1+ years of supervisory experience in an industrial, manufacturing, or processing facility (recycling or waste management experience an asset).
Strong understanding of material recovery operations, equipment, and safety protocols.
Proven leadership and team-building skills.
Ability to work in a fast-paced, physically demanding environment.
Strong communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
Comfortable with shift coordination and hands-on supervision.
Basic computer skills (e.g., MS Office, production reporting systems).
Valid driver’s license required.

Responsibilities

Supervise daily operations to ensure safe and efficient processing of materials.
Lead and support staff working in the facility
Monitor material flow, equipment performance, and quality control to meet processing targets.
Ensure compliance with all health and safety regulations, company policies, and environmental standards.
Schedule and coordinate workforce, including shift planning, task assignments, and break coverage.
Conduct daily safety and operations briefings; support a culture of continuous improvement.
Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to production, staffing, or equipment in a timely manner.
Liaise with maintenance staff to ensure equipment is serviced and operational.
Collaborate with the Facility Manager and other supervisors to optimize throughput and minimize downtime.
Provide training and guidance to new and existing employees.
Complete daily logs, shift reports, and incident reports as required.
Participate in audits, inspections, and emergency response when needed.
