JOB DESCRIPTION: LEAD INSTRUMENTATION ENGINEER

Title: Lead Instrumentation Engineer

Location: Abu Dhabi, UAE — KBR Office

EXPERIENCE

  • Experience: 15+ years of experience in FEED and Detail Engineering and EPCM experience in the Oil & Gas industry.
  • ADNOC EPC/PMC experience are highly preferred
  • Demonstrated track record delivering instrumentation design and integration on FEED/detail projects.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering in a related field.
  • Professional membership or relevant certifications (e.g., PE/Chartered Engineer) are a plus.
  • Certification related to instrumentation, control systems, or safety (e.g., ISA, SIL) is advantageous.

TECHNICAL SKILLS

  • Strong background in instrumentation, control systems, and SAFETY Instrumented Systems (SIS).
  • Proficiency with instrument specification, loop diagrams, I/O lists, and control system architecture.
  • Experience with process control strategies, DCS/PLC systems, fieldbus, intelligent devices, and field instrumentation.
  • Familiarity with FEED deliverables, MOC/Change control, and document controls.
  • Knowledge of standards and codes (IEC 61511, ISA standards, API RP 551/552, IEC 60654/61508 where applicable, NFPA).
  • Ability to perform instrument sizing, signal integrity analysis, and safety reviews; experience with commissioning and start-up activities.
  • Excellent analytical, troubleshooting, and decision-making abilities.
Responsibilities

JOB PURPOSE

  • Provide technical leadership for instrumentation, control, and safety systems within FEED and Detail Engineering projects in the Oil & Gas sector.
  • Define instrumentation design bases, standards, and deliverables to ensure safe, reliable, and cost-effective solutions.
  • Oversee integration with process, electrical, and multi-discipline interfaces; ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Mentor engineers, drive quality and schedule adherence, and ensure robust instrumentation deliverables across project phases.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead the engineering design, specification, and procurement support for field instrumentation, control systems, and safety instrumented systems (SIS).
  • Develop and review instrument design basis, datasheets, loop diagrams, instrument index, I/O lists, to include safety instrumented functions (SIF) where applicable.
  • Perform and supervise instrument sizing, signal integrity, signal lists, control valve selections, and actuator considerations; support loop philosophy and commissioning plans.
  • Ensure compliance with codes and standards (e.g., IEC 61511 for SIS, IEC 61131 for PLCs, API RP 551/552, ISA standards, NFPA, ISA-75) and project-specific requirements.
  • Coordinate interfaces with process, electrical, mechanical, civil, and reliability disciplines; manage vendors and third-party design reviews.
  • Lead risk assessments and safety reviews related to instrumentation and control systems (HAZOP/HAZID, LOPA, SIL) and participate in safety reviews.
  • Review and approve technical deliverables (P&IDs, instrument datasheets, loop diagrams, IO lists, MOC/Change Notes, design change requests, technical queries).
  • Mentor and develop junior instrumentation engineers; support staffing, training, and performance evaluations.
  • Develop and manage execution plans, man-hour estimates, and budgets for instrumentation scope.
  • Ensure QA/QC practices, drawing standards, datasheets, instrument calibration plans, and requisition packages.
  • Support field construction, commissioning, and start-up activities; participate in punch lists and as-built documentation.
  • Stay current with advances in instrumentation technology and recommend value-added solutions.
