UPMC Harrisburg is seeking an experienced Lactation Consultant looking to take on a Lead role; apply today to join this fantastic team! Provides optimal breastfeeding management. The lead lactation consultant is a highly developed role model of certified lactations consultants with focused expertise and accountabilities in one or more of the following: expert clinical practice, teaching/development, and/or evidence-based practice. This role partners with management in the achievement of a culture of excellence in lactation and patient care. The lead lactation consultant will provide feedback to the Unit Director on employee evaluations and offer feedback in the selection and hiring process of any new consultant. The lead lactation consultant, in collaboration with other health care professionals, applies superior clinical knowledge and skills to achieve quality patient care outcomes. Responsibilities: Participate in discharge planning by identifying post-discharge needs and providing breastfeeding instruction, providing information on the safe use of medication with breastfeeding and breastfeeding aids as well as on community support groups and services. Maintain accurate and legible patient care records and develop reports. Follow the mandatory reporting procedures for any incident or serious event that did affect or potentially could have affected the clinical care of any patient. Design and update staff instruction manual, review current and planned educational materials, policies and procedures. Conduct clinical training of professional, nursing and ancillary staff. Conduct clinical lactation rounds assessing patients' status and problems and develop individualized care plans. Assist in marketing lactation program to the community, establishing preceptorships and conducting informational seminars. Assist in employee preparation for lactation consultant certification examination. Act as a lactation consultant and referral resource for other health team members, patients, and their families. Serves as a leader in lactation practice, identifying patient and staff focused opportunities for improvement and leading the change process. Identifies, educates and supports the psychological and learning needs of staff during change and transition. Practices participatory leadership and is an active member of shared leadership at the unit, facility or system level. Assists the Unit/Department Leader with the peer review process. Develops and maintains productive working relationships internally and externally by building teams and relationships through mentoring and modeling uplifting and positive communication. Coaches' colleagues on cultural diversity and addresses workplace horizontal violence and impairment. Demonstrates accountability to self and others for safe work hours, time management and healthy lifestyles. Demonstrates knowledge of performance improvement tools and techniques. Continuously improves the quality of care and the work environment of outcomes and the integration of research and best practices into daily work. Shares learning from improvements with other units and/or spreads across the business unit or system. Mentors and role models quest for continuous learning through formal education and the development of others. Incorporates national professional organization as well as business unit and health system's goals to improve patient safety, quality and satisfaction of the patient experience in daily work. Creates a caring and compassionate patient focused experience by building healing relationships with patients, families and colleagues. CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire. Analytical ability and independent judgment; interpersonal skills; organizational and leadership abilities. Clinical lactation management skills including psycho-motor skills necessary to use appropriate breastfeeding aids and teaching skills to provide related in-services. Bachelor's degree in nursing, Lactation Consulting, or a related field (Master's degree preferred). 5 years of experience. Certification as an International Board-Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC). Proven experience in lactation education and support, preferably in a leadership or supervisory role. In-depth knowledge of breastfeeding physiology, infant nutrition, and evidence-based lactation practices. Strong understanding of cultural, socioeconomic, and ethical considerations related to lactation and infant feeding. Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to effectively train and educate diverse audiences. Demonstrated ability to lead and collaborate with interdisciplinary teams. Proficiency in using educational technology and online learning platforms.
