What you'll do Strategic Oversight: Define and own the optical systems requirements gathering process for complex, next-generation projects. Design Leadership: Lead the architecture and optical systems design, driving critical design reviews and ensuring technical excellence across the lifecycle. Advanced Engineering: Oversee and execute detailed optical design, including non-sequential ray tracing and strict design for manufacturability (DFM). Cross-Functional Collaboration: Interface with and steer a multi-disciplinary team, providing technical direction, domain expertise, and mentorship to optical, electrical, and mechanical engineers. Metrology & Instrumentation: Spearhead the design, development, calibration, and build of advanced optical metrology systems and instrumentation. Validation & Testing: Authorise and manage comprehensive validation test plans and procedures for complex optical systems. Space Standards Ownership: Drive the development and implementation of Mbryonics' internal design practices, project management methodologies, and product development standards tailored specifically for space-qualified applications. Software Integration: Drive software development activities relevant to optical systems, data processing, and hardware automation. Future Technology: Drive the strategic application of data analytics, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and advanced computational processes within optical systems engineering. Who you are Education: PhD or MSc in Optics, Physics, Engineering, or a related technical field. Experience: Extensive, proven track record of relevant experience in optical systems architecture, design, and hardware development. Domain Expertise: Technical background in precision optical systems or space-based optical systems. Software Proficiency: Highly experienced in optical design software (e.g., Zemax, Code V). Specialized Knowledge: Comprehensive understanding of wavefront control, and advanced optical metrology techniques/instrumentation. Manufacturing Mindset: Solid foundation in design for manufacture and assembly (DFMA) principles. Space Environment: Strong understanding of space environment requirements, radiation effects, and aerospace industry standards. Coding & Analytics: Proficiency with software development languages (e.g., Python, C++) and advanced data analysis tools. Leadership & Influence: Demonstrated ability to lead, mentor, and inspire junior engineers while fostering a highly collaborative, multi-disciplinary environment. Project Execution: Strong background utilizing project management methodologies to deliver complex hardware milestones on schedule.
