Position Summary:
Under the direction of department leadership, the Lead Organ Recovery Specialist is responsible for coordinating, assisting, and performing many of the key aspects related to the surgical recovery portion of organ donation. The Lead Organ Recovery Specialist acts as an expert resources and subject matter expert for specific clinical skillsets performed by the Organ Recovery team. As the subject matter expert, the Lead Organ Recovery Specialist helps further develop team skills and works with Hospital Development team as recovery liaison. The Lead Organ Recovery Specialist fosters a collaborative/team working spirit and actively helps and supports others to achieve team goals. May work with Organ Recovery Educator to help develops education materials.

EDUCATION

  • Associate’s Degree from an accredited college or university in a related healthcare field required
  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in a related healthcare field required

EXPERIENCE

  • 1-3 years operating room and/or patient care experience as a Surgical Technician, Surgical Assistant, Circulating Nurse or similar position required
  • 1-3 years Specialist Organ Recovery required
  • Valid Wisconsin Driver’s License and access to a vehicle required

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Familiarity with aseptic technique and sterile fields required
  • Ability to handle surgical instruments and organs/tissues safely required
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate with others in challenging and stressful situations as well as conflict resolution skills required
  • Good organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks at one time while maintaining attention to detail required
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment required
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a professional and courteous demeanor required
  • Knowledge of basic medical terminology, medications, disease processes and human anatomy required
  • Ability to use a personal computer, Microsoft Office and the internet for data entry and retrieval of information required
Responsibilities
  • Meets and performs all aspects of the Organ Recovery Specialist role, including, but not limited to: serves as the primary contact person for operating room during donor cases, gives notification to OR staff of pending cases, is available to respond to questions/concerns from the OR staff, assist OR staff as needed with preparation for organ recovery, secures placement of all authorized non-transplantable organs for research, independently recovers organs for research/education, performs intra-operative organ preservation and organ perfusion, coordinates transportation of recovered organs and tissues to recipient transplant centers or research facilities, ensures all recovered organs and tissues are packaged with appropriate paperwork, blood and tissue specimens per UNOS policy, assists OR staff with post-mortem care, and completes all organ recovery and preservation related documentation accurately.
  • Becomes subject matter expert in all ORS clinical skills proficiencies as appropriate and supports staff onsite to ensure staff develops competency in all skills.
  • Contributes to organ AOC by covering call shifts as ORS schedule allows and when schedule allows, completes clinical consultation in collaboration with ORS on donation cases
  • Participates in ORS GEMBA requirements to offer support to team members in the field and identify opportunities for further education or process improvement.
  • Functions as a recovery liaison for designated hospital, hospital system or HRL, assists Hospital Relations Specialists with educating health care professionals and the public regarding organ donation/recovery; may develop, conduct, and participate in education programs for health care professionals and the public.
  • Supports and demonstrates a customer service commitment to internal and external customers through adherence to Versiti customer service standards and processes.
  • Maintains competence through attendance job-related continuing education.
  • Actively participates and contributes in Lean and continuous improvement, contributes to quality assurance activities, actively participates in and supports all departmental outreach initiatives, proactively seeks continued professional development
  • Understands and performs to all applicable regulatory and compliance requirements set forth by AOPO (Association of Organ Procurement Organizations), CMS and UNOS.
  • Demonstrates schedule flexibility as determined by business need, required evening, weekend and holiday work hours. Work/job related travel and reliable transportation is required.
  • Works in partnership with colleagues and other departments to achieve common goals, and consistently strives to enhance existing protocols and procedures.
