Pharm@Sea, a wholly-owned subsidiary of University Hospitals Sussex NHS Trust, invites talented individuals to apply for the full time position of a Lead Pharmacist for our newly opened second site. Nestled within the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath, our new site provides a dynamic and rewarding career in a company dedicated to innovative hospital outpatient care. Our original site, Pharm@Sea, has experienced several years of growth and success within the Trust, and the opportunity to expand means that we can now recruit for another newly purpose-built, specialist Outpatient Pharmacy.

JOB SUMMARY

As a Lead Pharmacist, you will lead, manage and develop the pharmacists’ team and services to achieve high professional and operational standards, exemplary levels of service, and delivery of pharmacy objectives and targets. Working with the Operations Support Lead, you will support the pharmacy team’s planning and organisation to meet the needs of patients and the operation. We are looking for a compliance oriented, solution focused and patient centered individual to fulfil Lead Pharmacist responsibilities within the pharmacy, ensuring all professional, ethical and legal obligations are met.

1. LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT

  • Lead, manage and develop the performance of the pharmacists’ team and the Operations Support Lead, using formal procedures and informal regular coaching and feedback
  • Support the Operations Support Lead so they can lead, manage and develop the rest of the pharmacy team using formal procedures and informal regular coaching and feedback.
  • Drive personal development in leadership and management through own performance reviews and by seeking regular feedback and coaching and exploiting available training
  • Design and deliver an ongoing training program to support staff to ensure they can perform their roles effectively
  • Support the Operations Support Lead to ensure efficient planning and organisation of the pharmacy team to meet the needs of patients and the operation
  • Support with shortlisting and interviewing candidates for any vacancies that arise
  • Support the Office Manager in accurately checking monthly timesheets before sending them off for payment.
  • Liaise with the Office Manager to support the management of rota and annual leave requests.

2. To act as Responsible Pharmacist:

  • Lead by example, participating in clinical screening, accuracy checking, patient counselling and advisory services.
  • Supervising the sale and supply of medicines.
  • Clinically screening prescriptions to ensure safe, optimal and cost-effective use of medicines.
  • To take on the role of the Responsible Pharmacist and delegate when absent
  • Maintaining competence to perform these duties and ensuring high professional standards at all times.
  • Ensure that dispensing and all services are consistently delivered to the required standard through SOP compliance by the whole pharmacy team (including locums).

3. Business Development:

  • Supporting initiatives to reduce waiting times and improve the patient experience.
  • To provide support to the Superintendent Pharmacist by assisting in the clinical screening, accuracy checking, patient counselling and advisory services at peak periods and / or enabling the Superintendent Pharmacist to manage non-urgent work.
  • Supporting the Superintendent Pharmacist to ensure that dispensing and all services are consistently delivered to the required standard through SOP compliance by the whole pharmacy team (including locums).
  • Supporting the Superintendent Pharmacist and Operations Support Lead in the recruitment process of staff.
  • Support the induction and ongoing training programme to ensure staff can perform their roles effectively
  • Supporting the Superintendent Pharmacist in the development of the business by being involved in;

  • Seeking out opportunities to increase business turnover through innovative and opportunistic venture
    -Supporting the development and delivery of an appropriate training plan for the business

-Improving the storage, preparation, dispensing and sale or supply of medicines within the business, striving for exceptional service standards

  • Ensure that all enhanced services are proactively offered to patients and customers, and opportunities for new services are highlighted to patients
  • Supporting the Superintendent Pharmacist in preparing SOPs and documentation where necessary
  • To undertake any other duties that may reasonably be required

4. Dispensing duties:

  • Prepare labels using the pharmacy computer system and correctly assemble prescriptions, ensuring each item is accurately dispensed and in the proper packaging, according to standard operating procedures (SOP)
  • Organise the timely supply of out of stock medication to patients, prioritise and delegate to other pharmacy team members when necessary
  • Communicate any delays in supply to the appropriate person
  • Counsel patients on the use of their dispensed medications, offering advice and answering any queries

5. Customer service and Communication:

  • Engender a “patient first” culture across the organisation, ensuring high standards of professional customer service are delivered at all times within the pharmacy
  • Ensure that healthy relationships are built with our customers to understand their needs to deliver customer satisfaction
  • To liaise with other healthcare professionals to assist in patient care continuity across primary and secondary sectors
  • Support the Superintendent Pharmacist to conduct regular customer and stakeholder surveys to measure satisfaction
  • Work with the Superintendent Pharmacist on implementing customer service improvement plans in conjunction with the pharmacy team
  • Work with the Operations Support Lead to deliver weekly Communication to the team to ensure a continued and consistent approach to the operations
  • Deal with customer complaints promptly and efficiently in line with the company complaints procedure
  • To provide advice on leading a healthy lifestyle
  • To respond to customers’ symptoms and recommend suitable products and provide advice on their correct use, including the sale of over-the-counter (OTC) and Pharmacy-only medicines

6. Training:

  • Take responsibility for own CPD and maintain an up-to-date portfolio of evidence to meet General Pharmaceutical Council requirements.
  • Aid the Superintendent Pharmacist in the induction of new staff.
  • Train new Pharmacists, Technicians and Assistants by demonstrating techniques and procedures to undertake labelling, dispensing, sale of OTC and pharmacy-only medicines, receipt and storage of stock, and the use of the pharmacy automated dispensing system (robot).
  • Attend any education and training sessions as requested by the Superintendent Pharmacist.
  • The jobholder must participate in an annual appraisal process and work towards meeting identified development needs.
