As a Lead Principal Engineer within Unipart’s Rail and Public Transportation sector, you will be contributing to our business growth strategy by delivering performance improvement for our customers, through our Design, Engineering and Manufacturing capabilities. You will be responsible for leading the Engineering Technical Support Team in their duties and activities to support the business and market including bids support, dedicated development of innovation and introduction of new products, technologies and services for all customers and suppliers and management of the Unipart Rail safety and incident management process
Reporting to the Head of Technical Support you will support the relevant business management team and be comfortable to make decisions independently to support the diversity of support required by the business. You will lead a team and will be responsible to ensure that engineering projects and actions are based on technical risk free and good sound quality advice; you will deal with senior customers and Unipart representatives (including Board level) so should possess excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
This role is both reactive and proactive as it deals with new opportunities and assists with new business development in the field, it has some independence to make the correct decisions but is part of a team responsible for taking and delivering new and existing business projects.
You will be creative and capable of transforming business/customer aspirations into reality using a wide range of analytical influence and judgment skills. Furthermore you will be flexible in line with customer demand supporting across the relevant business targets; some travel is required with the role.

Essential Criteria

  • Knowledge of rail vehicles operations and rolling stock products
  • Good problem-solving capability and management of complex issues
  • Sound commercial and business acumen and ability to write proposals.
  • Excellent communication skills and able to build relationships with providers and customers.
  • Ability to work at various levels within the Organisation.
  • Able to create forward strategic technical and technology development plans.
  • Management of internal and external stakeholders and associated development projects
  • Possess a degree in Engineering or Science Discipline or with equivalent Railway Engineering experience

Desirable Criteria

  • Experience gained in the Railway industry, or a comparable safety critical industry sector.
  • Understanding and knowledge of rail products and approvals processes
  • Knowledge of creation and protection of Intellectual Property
