JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY:
The Lead Radiation Therapist will supervise the delivery of care for all the treatment machines and the simulator as well as providing additional direction to the CT scanner and the block room. The position will oversee daily activities, monitor quality of care, and evaluate the performance of employees in these areas. Assist is budgeting and evaluating department variances on an ongoing basis. The Lead Radiation Therapist will participate in clinical and/or didactic instruction and evaluation of the Radiation Therapy Students when they are at the University. The position adheres to and enforces policies and procedures of the Department as well as local, state, and federal rules and regulations and requirements of accrediting bodies.
JOB DESCRIPTION:
- Oversee day to day operations in Simulator, Linear Accelerators, CT, and Block room. Reports problem areas to Director.
- Participates in quality assurance monitoring, treatment technique and documentation.
- Demonstrates an appreciation of the hospital mission as a teaching institution by providing staff with knowledge and expertise.
- Completes weekly machine and call schedule for therapist ensuring adequate coverage
- Ensures necessary supplies are on hand that are needed for daily operation. Orders new supplies or advises department secretary of needed supplies when possible.
- Attends various department meetings (Divisional Staff meeting, Morbidity & Mortality Conference, monthly Physics meeting, monthly Quality Assurance, etc.) and others as advised.
- Assists with evaluations on Therapists prior to deadline set by Director.
- Gives input on annual budgets (revenue, expenses, and capital). Ensures charges are entered and reconciled daily. Assists in operating department within budgetary limits and looks for ways to improve efficiency. Balances quality and cost in making decisions on how resources are utilized and budgeted. Understands requirements of outpatient oncology reimbursement including coding and billing requirements. Monitors daily billing to ensure that is complete and correct. Reports to department secretary or assigned staff any needed changes in a timely manner.
- Works with Physicians, Residents and other members of the multidisciplinary team conducting care in all areas of the department to ensure proper care to all patients.
- Keeps all records up to date including but not limited to Personnel Action Requests, Port Film monitoring, schedules, in-services, Absentee-Tardy Calendar, supplies ordered, etc.
- Assists with patient/staff/physician satisfaction activities. Reviews patient satisfaction data and comments monthly and shares with staff. Implements activities to improve the patient/family experience at University Hospital and the Brown Cancer Center. Addresses any complaints or concerns in a timely manner. Rounds with patients/family members daily and reviews information received to recognize staff and make improvements to service. Reviews staff satisfaction data annually and implements activities to improve staff satisfaction. Rounds with all staff regularly. Rewards and recognizes staff based on staff recommendations, rounding and comments noted in patient satisfaction surveys. Evaluates turnover risks and implements strategies to reduce staff turnover. Maintains on-going interface with medical staff and acts on concerns in a timely manner.
- Conducts monthly communication meetings with the Director of assigned staff. Prepares agenda and minutes and documents attendance.
- Conducts rounding sessions on staff and patients and records in log for necessary follow-up.
- Performs other duties as assigned by authorized personnel or as requested to meet the needs of the facility as well as internal and external customers.

(EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, LICENSURE AND CERTIFICATION)
Education:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Radiologic Sciences required.
- Graduate of JRCERT approved program in Radiologic Technology with
completion of curriculum in Radiation Therapy.
Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years as a Radiation Therapist (required).
Licensure:
- Registered with the American Registry of Radiological Technologists with certification in Radiation Therapy (required).
- Certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BLS) (required).
- Commonwealth of Kentucky Radiation Operator Certificate (required).
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities critical to this role:
- Understanding and awareness of policies, procedures, rules and regulations.
- Ability to demonstrate and apply this knowledge in performance of administrative support tasks.
- Ability to explain and interpret information to clients/customers and staff.
COMPUTER SKILLS:
Demonstrated computer management skills. Considerable knowledge of computer applications such as Aria/Cerner.
