Reporting to the Manager of Transit Service Vehicles, you will be responsible for developing, overseeing, and managing Calgary Transit’s diversified fleet strategy, including the transition to cleaner fuel technologies for the existing bus fleet. You will manage staff, projects, and initiatives that support and sustain Calgary Transit’s fleet maintenance strategy, fleet replacement and asset management, as well as maintenance data governance and analysis for over 1,000 buses and 220 light rail vehicles. You will also oversee reporting on an annual divisional budget exceeding $140 million in operating and $100 million in capital. This position is also accountable for aligning divisional strategies with The City’s four-year budget cycle, annual capital investment programs, external funding opportunities, and the Council-approved 30-year RouteAhead strategy. Primary duties include:

  • Provide strategic direction and oversight for Calgary Transit’s fleet lifecycle, including the 10-year fleet plan and maintenance strategies, using data to inform decisions and align with budget cycle planning and business unit goals and objectives.
  • Collaborate across all Calgary Transit divisions to ensure Transit Service Vehicles aligns its strategies with the broader business unit, supporting increased service hours and expanded coverage in line with population growth and the 30-year RouteAhead strategy.
  • Work with the Calgary Transit’s Business Strategy team to develop funding applications that supplement and support contributions from provincial and federal governments, as well as other external partners, to fund fleet replacement, growth, and maintain a state of good repair for fleet assets.
  • Oversee the development, implementation, and sustainment of a fleet transition strategy that outlines Calgary Transit’s shift from internal combustion engine vehicles to low- and zero-emission technologies.
  • Analyze, maintain, and ensure the integrity of fleet data for over 1,000 buses and 200 light rail vehicles to inform the fleet asset management strategy, funding requests, and alignment with the City’s budget, annual investment programs, and other Council-approved strategies.
  • Lead business process reviews and make recommendations to standardize procedures and ensure consistent maintenance practices across all facilities.
  • Collaborate with Finance and Operational Performance teams to manage and oversee reporting on capital and operating budgets for projects, vehicle procurement, fleet maintenance, and operating expenditures.
  • Oversee the development of procurement documents related to specific projects, studies, or initiatives, and manage third-party consultants, contractors, and vendors.
  • Participate in zero-emission vehicle committees and contribute to the development of codes, standards, and guidelines with national authorities.
  • Coach, mentor, and manage staff performance, including hiring, training, discipline, goal setting, and career and professional development.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A degree in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, or other related engineering degree’s.
  • You must have at least 8 years of relevant professional engineering experience obtained after receiving your P. Eng. Designation and a current licensure as a Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) complete with practicing status OR licensure and practicing status by the first day of work Click here for more details.
  • At least 2 years of leadership experience on projects/team development.
  • Success in this position requires strong leadership skills, the ability to effectively communicate, strategic and critical thinking, problem solving, change management, and data-driven decision making, alongside a demonstrated ability to manage staff.
