JOB SUMMARY

We are seeking a compassionate and dedicated Learning Support Assistant to join one of our education colleges in Newcastle. This role is pivotal in providing support to students with diverse learning needs, particularly those with autism and other disabilities. The ideal candidate will have a passion for education and a commitment to fostering an inclusive environment that promotes the development of all students.

QUALIFICATIONS/TRAINING

  • Good general level of education to L2 or equivalent including English and Maths
  • Training/qualification in disability awareness
  • Qualification or training in personal care and manual handling
  • Teaching or support qualification or significant experience

EXPERIENCE

  • Supporting learners with SEND or additional learning needs
  • Delivering personal care in an education or similar setting
  • Working in an education or care setting
  • Supporting learners who exhibit challenging behaviour

SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

  • Understanding of the barriers faced by students with additional support needs
  • Understanding of FE funding, quality and inspection frameworks
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Good IT skills with the ability to record effectively using both paper and electronic systems
  • Understanding of teaching, learning and assessment strategies
  • Understanding of the SEN Code of Practice and Preparing for Adulthood agenda

Responsibilities
  • Assist teachers in delivering tailored educational programmes for students with special educational needs
  • Provide one-on-one support to students, helping them engage with the curriculum and develop their skills
  • Facilitate communication between students and their peers, promoting social interaction and inclusion
  • Implement strategies to support students with autism and other disabilities, ensuring their individual needs are met
  • Monitor student progress and behaviour, providing feedback to teachers and parents as necessary
  • Assist in the care of toddlers, ensuring their safety and well-being during activities
  • Collaborate with other professionals, such as speech therapists and occupational therapists, to enhance student learning experiences
  • Maintain a positive and encouraging learning environment that fosters growth and independence
