The School of Computing and Digital Technologies is a large and vibrant school engaged in taught programs, research and innovation, and knowledge exchange. All our UG and PG programs are underpinned by project-based learning, which facilitates embedding industry experience across all the programs. The school is home to the multi-disciplinary team that composes the Smart Interactive Technologies lab, which focuses on innovative research and developments investigating all the aspects of modelling and applying physical and intelligent systems, which coexist harmoniously.

We are home to world-class games developer Sumo Digital, cloud computing giant WANdisco, broadband provider PlusNet, online publishing house Twinkl, the National Videogame Museum and the British Games Institute, among many others. Alongside our many connections with digital and tech businesses, we conduct our own work in industry. Steel Minions is our commercial games development studio, where students create and publish their own games on the PlayStation store. We are also home to the Centre of Excellence in Terrorism, Resilience, Intelligence and Organised Crime (CENTRIC), working with government, police, and private companies to increase our security.
Our students also work on live projects with businesses as part of their course, so there are plenty of opportunities to collaborate and set projects with industry, from Sheffield’s many IT firms to the biggest names in computing.
