About the role
The Department of War Studies seeks to appoint a Lecturer in Diplomacy and Foreign Policy Education to contribute to the Department’s teaching and scholarship in this area. This is a one-year fixed-term AEP position. Appointments to the Academic Education Pathway (AEP) are focused on the delivery of education, education-related scholarship and leadership in education.
The successful candidate will be committed to delivering high quality and innovative teaching within the broad field of diplomacy and foreign policy to undergraduate and taught postgraduate students from a wide range of backgrounds. You will contribute to both compulsory and optional teaching in the department at both BA and MA levels, and so should be able to demonstrate experience of teaching diplomacy and foreign policy at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level. Candidates should have expertise in diplomacy and foreign policy from the nineteenth century to today, with an ability to teach historical case studies and develop their relevance to contemporary diplomacy and foreign policy, as well as to blend historical analysis with practical diplomatic strategies.
The postholder will also undertake and publish high-quality scholarship and play a role in the institutional and intellectual development of War Studies. They will also undertake Departmental, School, Faculty and University administrative duties as required. Applicants must have a PhD.

This is a full time post (35 hours per week), and you will be offered an fixed term contract for 12 months.
About you
To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

• PhD awarded in International Relations, international politics, or other relevant subject
• Experience of thoughtful, innovative teaching of undergraduate and/or postgraduate students on issues related to diplomacy and foreign policy
• An emerging research agenda and a capacity to relate this to teaching
• Advanced communication skills, both oral and written
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Willingness to contribute to diversity and inclusion efforts within the department
• For an appointment at Grade 7, candidates must have a PhD thesis published or in press as a monograph AND at least 2 papers published/ in press in peer-reviewed journals; OR at least 5 research papers published/in press in high-quality peer reviewed journals
• For an appointment at Grade 7, candidates must also show proven ability in and experience of academic leadership

Desirable criteria

• A track record of wider administrative contribution to the delivery of departmental activities.
• Familiarity with, experience of, and/or an emerging agenda for innovative pedagogies as well as curriculum and teaching design
• Emerging track record in research dissemination
