The department UCL Arts and Sciences (UASc) is the home for the Bachelor of Arts and Sciences (BASc) which is the UK’s leading interdisciplinary degree, covering arts, social sciences and sciences degree. BASc combines the breadth of interdisciplinary study across the arts and sciences with the opportunity to specialise in one or two key subject areas. The degree is structured around a compulsory Core and 4 Pathways: Cultures, Health and Environment, Sciences and Engineering, and Societies. Students choosing Cultures or Societies as their major must choose Health and Environment or Sciences and Engineering as their minor pathway, and vice versa.
There is also postgraduate taught sister programme to UCL’s Bachelor of Arts and Sciences (BASc), the Creative Health MASc which combines the breadth of interdisciplinary study across the arts and sciences, with the opportunity to specialise in the role of non-clinical, community-led, socially engaged approaches to public health.
UCL Arts and Sciences also launched a new undergraduate degree, the Bachelor in Creative Arts and Humanities (BACAH), in 2023/24. Along with the MASc Creative Health, this degree is homed at UCL East and brings together critical humanities thinking with practices of writing, performance and moving images. BACAH further develops the UASc departments’ interdisciplinarity by bringing together critical humanities thinking with critical practice.
The Department has a doctoral programme in Interdisciplinary Societies, Arts and Sciences which accepted its first students in the 2023/24 academic year and is aiming to grow to 20 doctoral students.
ABOUT THE ROLE
We are looking for a Lecturer to develop teaching and research in the area of interdisciplinary politics and management. This role will contribute to the UASc Department in all facets and will have a focus on teaching on the Bachelor of Arts and Sciences (BASc), with particular attention to the Societies pathway, including acting as a Personal Academic Tutor for up to 30 students. We are seeking a Lecturer who will have experience in research and teaching in the area of politics and management, and who will contribute to our module portfolio (Level 5) and research, with a specific focus on interdisciplinarity including:
The postholder will co-convene BASC0001 Approaches to Knowledge: Introduction to Interdisciplinarity a compulsory module for first year BASc students, and will develop new modules linked to politics and management, based on the expertise of the postholder.
The postholder will contribute excellent research in interdisciplinary politics and management. The area of research should be interdisciplinary and related to a discipline or disciplines relevant to interdisciplinary politics and management. The postholder will be primarily, though not solely, associated with the Societies pathway on the BASc. The post holder will undertake personal academic tutoring and will help students to navigate course choices on their major and minor pathways and curate an individualised, coherent degree for them.
The post is based at the Bloomsbury campus, but may be required to travel to the UCL East campus in Stratford for departmental activities or to contribute to teaching on the BA Creative Arts and Humanities or MASc Creative Health programmes.
This post is full-time and available from 1 August 2025 or as soon as possible after that date.
