The School of Arts, Language and Cultures at the University of Manchester features one of the UK’s largest concentrations of high-quality research and teaching in languages and linguistics. The School is strongly committed to the enhancement of excellence, in step with the University’s ambitious plans as set out in the document Our Future. In REF 2021 the University was ranked fifth in the UK for research power; Modern Languages and Linguistics was ranked seventh. The School is seeking to appoint a permanent, full-time Lecturer to contribute to research and teaching in the Department of Linguistics and English Language (LEL). The Department of Linguistics and English Language stands out in the UK and beyond in the breadth of subject areas and theoretical approaches represented by its members. Particular strengths include: phonetics and phonology, semantics, pragmatics, morphology, syntax, typology, language contact and multilingualism, language development and first language acquisition, variationist sociolinguistics, historical linguistics, the field-work based study of lesser-described languages, the linguistics of English (both synchronic and diachronic), the linguistics of Romance languages (synchronic and diachronic), corpus linguistics, forensic linguistics, computational linguistics, and experimental and quantitative approaches. The Department offers undergraduate programmes in Linguistics and in English Language, a master’s programme in Linguistics, and, from 2024, an MSc in Computational and Corpus Linguistics. We are looking for a high-achieving colleague to enhance our research and teaching strengths in syntax.
