ABOUT US
The UCL Institute of Archaeology is recognised as one of the leading academic departments of Archaeology in the world. It is the largest department within its field in the UK. It offers a uniquely stimulating environment with more than 60 staff pursuing high-quality research across five continents. We are at the forefront of global archaeology, conservation and heritage studies and have well-equipped laboratory facilities for the archaeological sciences, including comparative anatomy collections; recording standards for age and sex estimation; an extensive series of casts for teaching forensic anthropology; x-ray machine; scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy; a range of chemical analytical techniques and stable isotope analysis; and one of the largest archaeology libraries in the world.
The MSc in Bioarchaeological and Forensic Archaeology programme trains students in the fundamental skills and knowledge to study human remains in both bioarchaeological and forensic anthropological contexts. This degree provides students with a solid grounding in all aspects of skeletal and dental anatomy, methods and procedures for assessing human skeletal remains, identifying disease in the skeleton, broader research skills and the legal/ethical concerns when dealing with modern (forensic) and archaeological human remains. Students learn how to identify, analyse and report on skeletonised human remains, both from archaeological and forensic contexts.
