JOB OVERVIEW

Bluestar Professional Services Inc. is a family investment office that invests in small to medium sized Canadian businesses, taking controlling interests to maximize the value of their investments for all stakeholders, including employees, clients and investors.
We are looking for a knowledgeable and experienced Legal Accounting Manager to join the Finance team. The successful candidate must be an enthusiastic self-starter and strong team player who takes initiative. The ideal candidate must be able to interact with colleagues, clients and third-party suppliers in a professional, and collaborative manner.

The successful candidate will be responsible for assisting the Director of Finance with the management of the overall financial operations of our legal practices. They will work with the Director of Finance to:

  • Lead and manage the accounting team, providing guidance, mentorship, and performance evaluations.
  • Direct and manage the firm’s accounting functions, establishing and maintaining accounting principles, practices, and procedures.
  • Maintain the company’s accounting systems and implement changes as required.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • A minimum of 3 years’ progressive experience in finance and/or accounting leadership roles.
  • Post-secondary education in accounting, finance, or a related business discipline; CPA, CA, or equivalent designation strongly preferred.
  • Prior experience with Accounting for Law Firms is an asset.
  • Demonstrated expertise in Excel, including advanced functions such as pivot tables, lookups, and complex formulas.
  • Financial analysis, budgeting and some strategic planning experience.
  • Good problem-solving skills and the ability to make the necessary decisions to move forward the work at hand.
  • Strong commitment to maintaining LSO regulations and operational standards
  • Travel within the GTA is required.

Responsibilities

WHAT YOU WILL DO:

  • Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, billings, journal entries, and payroll processing.
  • Reconcile trust, general and credit card accounts on a regular basis.
  • Maintain a list of upcoming deadlines requiring accounting duties.
  • Assist in the Month-End and Year-End processes.
  • Ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements for trust accounting.
  • Collaborate with attorneys and other staff to address financial inquiries and issues.
  • Utilize firm Practice Management and other accounting software to manage financial transactions and reports.
  • Supervise a shared services team responsible for transactional accounting across multiple law firms.
  • Provide advice and guidance on all accounting matters including financial systems, record keeping, analysis, and reporting.
  • Assist in setting the priorities within accounting group.
  • Manage banking relationships, including transactions, wire transfers, and account administration.
  • Maintain strong relationships with external service providers, including financial institutions and consultants.
  • Identify and mitigate financial and operational risks in collaboration with senior leadership.
  • Implement and maintain internal controls to safeguard company assets and ensure data integrity.
  • Foster a high-performing team environment through effective leadership, training, and development.
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement by encouraging knowledge sharing and process documentation.
  • Contribute to a positive and productive workplace by ensuring the team has the tools, systems, and support needed to succeed.
  • Other related duties and required or assigned.
