LEGAL ASSISTANT
CURIE (Canadian Universities Reciprocal Insurance Exchange) located in Burlington, Ontario is seeking a permanent, full-time legal assistant to join its legal services department, supporting in-house litigation, regulatory and privacy matters.
The ideal candidate is an extremely organized, detail-oriented, self-starter who can manage multiple demands accurately, efficiently, and with professionalism. The chosen candidate will report directly to the General Counsel.
REQUIREMENTS
Knowledge of the Rules of Civil Procedure, court practices and procedures in various jurisdictions;
Proficiency in Word, Adobe and Outlook and experience with legal document software and Excel spreadsheets;
Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, including the ability to professionally interact with clients, subscribers, other lawyers, and court staff and to draft correspondence;
Strong attention to detail;
Superior organizational and time management skills; and
Ability to problem solve with discretion and sound judgment, and ability to work both collaboratively and independently.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
University degree or college diploma
Certificate in Legal Administration or equivalent
3 years of experience in a legal assistant role
Knowledge of or experience in the insurance industry is an asset
Prepare and serve legal documents including pleadings, Affidavits of Documents, Notices of Examination, Motion Records, Mediation Memoranda, Pre-Trial Conference Memoranda and Affidavits of Service;
Electronically file court documents including pleadings, Motion Records and Pre-Trial Conference Memoranda;
Schedule client meetings, Examinations for Discovery and mediations and maintain calendar of General Counsel;
Set up and maintain electronic filing and follow-up systems;
Prepare undertakings charts;
Compile and maintain document briefs;
Draft correspondence to clients, subscribers, and opposing counsel;
Respond to inquiries from clients, subscribers, and opposing counsel in a timely and professional manner;
Prepare accounts and requisition cheques for disbursements;
Prepare expense reports;
Other tasks as assigned.
