Our Calgary office is looking for a legal assistant in our Labour + Employment department. This is a role where you will work with a variety of our firm’s team members and will be responsible for completing a variety of tasks for lawyers doing work in the practice area of L+E law.
You must understand the importance of confidentiality in a professional setting and have great attention to detail. You are organized and able to focus on the task at hand. Your ability to prioritize assists you in meeting deadlines. You are a team player and want to be a part of a great team.

QUALIFICATIONS + SKILLS

  • 4+ years of experience preferably working in the labour + employment law practice area
  • Recognized 2-year Legal Assistant Diploma
  • Familiarity with the Employment Standards Code, Labour Relations Board and Workers Compensation is an asset
  • Advanced computer skills
  • Strong analytical skills and problem solving with minimal supervision
  • Ability to prioritize effectively and manage high pressure deadlines
Responsibilities
  • Preparing, amending, and comparing letters and legal documents
  • Answer the telephone, schedule appointments, book meetings, greet visitors and handle administrative and business details
  • Manage lawyer’s and paralegal’s diaries and electronic calendars
  • Review correspondence (including faxes and e-mail), co-ordinate the flow of information and respond to routine inquiries
  • Overseeing the opening and closing of files as well as filing of physical documents
  • Provide back-up for other assistants in their absence
  • Review and proofread outgoing documents to ensure they are correct and comply with legal procedures
  • Access and use online legal resources
  • Booking and diarizing Court dates, filing deadlines and return dates
  • Manage routine accounting procedures: billing including client follow up on outstanding A/R, cheque deposits/requests, lawyer’s time entry, preparation and submission of expense reports, handling wires, trust funds, etc.
  • Preparing engagement letters for new clients and coordinating with Compliance Department with respect to opening and closing of files
  • Ensuring file management system is kept current
  • Perform general office duties as required
