Description

AT CANCER RESEARCH UK, WE EXIST TO BEAT CANCER.

We are professionals with purpose, beating cancer every day. But we need to go much further and much faster. That’s why we’re looking for someone talented, someone who wants to develop their skills, someone like you.
This is an opportunity to join Cancer Research UK’s Legal Service team which is essential to our Sustain Strategy . The Legal Service’s purpose is to provide credible legal advice and compliance across our workforce of over 600+ shops and 2,500+ office staff that enables us to be an inclusive, sustainable, and agile organisation. This involves legally safeguarding the charity, maximising efficiency and effectiveness, and leveraging external legal partners to optimise pro bono and low bono support for the charity.
As Legal Compliance Counsel, you will play an essential role in safeguarding the charity by overseeing legal compliance and litigation management across the organisation. This will involve helping to develop and implement Cancer Research UK’s legal compliance strategy, while mapping and managing legal compliance, regulatory requirements, and internal policies. Furthermore, you will influence and partner across the organisation (including Risk, Assurance, Insurance, Finance, ESG etc.), advising on business law and risk management to embed effective litigation management procedures and regulatory compliance.
If you are an experienced Legal professional with significant post-qualification experience in corporate governance and compliance, we’d love for you to join our mission.

WHAT SKILLS WILL I NEED?

  • Experienced Legal professional with significant post-qualification experience in corporate governance and compliance (either within private practice or in-house environments).
  • Ideally understands charity compliance and/ or has experience in the not-for-profit sector (this is desirable but not essential, meaning we welcome applicants without this experience).
  • Independently provided expert legal advice on compliance, governance, and regulatory requirements (e.g., business law, charity commission, financial regulations, procurement, health & safety, data protection, etc.,).
  • Strong prioritisation and organisation skills with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision, while managing multiple projects and delivering to deadlines with strong attention to detail.
  • Has built credible and collaborative stakeholder relationships with experience influencing at all levels (including leadership) and clear verbal and written communication.
  • Demonstrable problem solving, analytical, and business intelligence skills.
  • IT literate – MS Office (including Word, Excel and Outlook).
  • Able to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
Our organisation values are designed to guide all that we do.
Bold: Act with ambition, courage and determination
Credible: Act with rigour and professionalism
Human : Act to have a positive impact on people
    Together: Act inclusively and collaboratively
We’re looking for people who can believe in and embody these organisation values and can use them to drive forward progress against our mission to beat cancer.
If you’re interested in applying and excited about working with us but are unsure if you have the right skills and experience we’d still love to hear from you.
