This role presents a rare opportunity to join our Legal function of a leading global betting and gaming company. Reporting to the Group Legal Director - Property, you’ll join a high visibility and highly effective legal team as our business embarks on an exciting new phase. In this role you will be working with the Retail teams on property legal issue arising within our UK portfolio of circa 1,350 shops operating under the William Hill brand plus liaising with external solicitors for matters relating to our global office portfolio.
The role requires the ability to handle a large and varied commercial property workload, to promptly identify risks and implement solutions, provide commercial as well as legal advice, develop strong relationships with key stakeholders, and have the confidence to advise on issues that have significant business impact.
This role is advertised on a fixed term basis, but may become permanent in the future.

  • 2-4 years PQE solicitor with proven real estate experience within a law firm or in house with ability to handle transactions from instruction to completion without supervision. UK/Scotland qualified is preferred
  • Excellent attention to detail with great communication skills with the ability to build excellent relationships with colleagues across the business
  • Good academic and legal background you’ll be commercial in approach, understanding the impact of legal issues or solutions on the operational activities of the business
  • Flexible in approach and a willingness to take on a large and varied workload.
Responsibilities

WHAT YOU WILL BE DOING:

  • Negotiating a high volume of commercial property transactions including new leases, lease renewals both by agreement and within the framework of the Landlord & Tenant Act 1954, lease variations and deeds of surrender
  • Handling applications to landlords for consent to alter, assign and sublet together with the negotiation of the corresponding licences and agreements
  • Working closely with the Estates team on key commercial terms and advising on risks
  • Working with external solicitors including active cost management and fee negotiation if required
  • Provision of commercial practical advice on any issues within the UK retail estate including advising on rent review notices, landlord and tenant ad hoc advice
  • Maintaining and updating internal records and legal precedents related to the property portfolio.
  • A basic knowledge of statutory landlord and tenant notices (e.g. section 26 requests/section 25 notices) including issuing court proceedings and subsequent compliance with court directions would be of interest but is not essential
