Wilayah Persekutuan Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia Job Family Group: Legal Jobs Worker Type: Regular (FTC) (Fixed Term) Posting Start Date: April 23, 2026 Business Unit: Upstream Experience Level: Experienced Professionals Job Description: Key Accountabilities To provide and/or act as integrator in the provision of timely, professional and fit-for-purpose legal advice and support to SMDS Participate in external negotiations with all applicable Government agencies, NOCs, other IOCs and contractors/vendors and drafting agreements to ensure that SMDS’ legal and commercial interests are well-represented and projects are delivered to meet performance targets Proactively identify and prioritise commercial and legal risks and rewards, cultivate a strong understanding of the end-to-end value chain, ensuring appropriate alternative commercial and legal structures and strategies are considered, and documents are appropriately drafted to reflect commercial decisions, at all times consistent with professional standards, legal obligations, the Shell General Business Principles and the Shell Performance Framework Ensure that legal considerations, including mitigation of legal risks identified, are taken into account in operations, planning activities, contracting, new business/project development, including relations with relevant third parties To devise, manage and provide legal advice on SMDS related claims for and against the companies’ businesses and functions prior to and during commencement of litigation: Responsible for all activities related to litigation matters or disputes including case assessment process, strategy development, client communication, management of outside counsel, recommendation of provisions and disclosures, settlement or resolution recommendations, management of reputational issues, and reporting of lessons learned; Proactively and regularly communicating with the Business and relevant legal teams on significant developments in the matters handled; Engagement and close management of external counsel and spend; and Responsible for negotiating and managing the budget for each matter including the budget for external litigation counsel and all other expenses related to the matters. Expected to be autonomous and must exercise appropriate judgement in informing the Managing Counsel Upstream Malaysia of any material issues, including matters of strategic, tactical or reputational importance and those that need to be escalated. Lead, with appropriate supervision, initiatives to enable and drive value-based legal support. Create and lead a positive, proactive culture encouraging high performance and collaboration and contribute to and enhances business decisions and continuity by sharing experience and knowledge and providing consistent, quality advice through a networked team. Provide advice in connection with, or otherwise participate in, key engagements with regulatory agencies and other stakeholders. Advise the Emergency Response Team/Incident Command Team and provide support to the Crisis Management Team. Advise on and ensure compliance with ethics and compliance frameworks, including anti-bribery & corruption, competition/anti-trust, sanctions, privacy & data governance, and records management. Special Challenges Managing high-value, high-risk, multi-jurisdictional issues in fast-moving operational and project environments. Balancing commercial ambition with risk appetite, ethics, and compliance obligations. Influencing cross-functional teams without direct authority in technical and commercial contexts. Responding rapidly to operational challenges, regulatory change, and matters requiring immediate legal support. Malaysia is a designated high-risk country from an ethics and compliance perspective and therefore the role requires an ability to identify and mitigate any potential risks with strong advocacy in defending Shell’s position in negotiation with various stakeholders. The federal and state governments, NOC, JV partners, and other contracting parties have in recent years started to take a more robust approach in interpreting and enforcing their legal rights. Legal is required to work with closely the business to protect Shell’s rights, develop solutions, and maintain good working relationships with counterparties. Requirements Law degree, with substantial post qualification legal experience in commercial or transactional matters, joint ventures and oil and gas regulatory frameworks. Fluent written and spoken English and Bahasa Malaysia. Ability to work in a dynamic legal environment with clients who need to respond quickly to operational and regulatory demands. Ability to work on and prioritise among multiple projects and issues that are being addressed simultaneously. Ability to explain clearly legal risks and to offer sound legal and commercial solutions within acceptable legal and risk frameworks. Good influencing, negotiation and facilitation skills. Ability to think strategically and to appreciate both the immediate and longer-term impacts on the business of different courses of action. Demonstrated ability to grasp quickly complex commercial arrangements. Demonstrable record as a self-starter, strong “can do” attitude and learner mindset. Proven ability to involve relevant SME and other legal colleagues and seamlessly deliver integrated legal advice. Manages stakeholder engagement through regular interface with operational functional and marketing teams as well as senior and executive management, including cross-functional leadership teams.
