Description

ABOUT YOU

We are looking for a qualified solicitor, barrister or legal executive with the knowledge, expertise and experience to deliver first class legal advice and support to Karbon’s leadership team and colleagues across a diverse range of legal areas relevant to social housing.
You will be a collaborative team player and confident legal advisor who will be a trusted and responsive point of contact for legal matters within the Group. You will have experience of managing or mentoring junior lawyers and must be adept at successfully managing your own varied workload with minimal supervision.

To be successful in the role you will have substantial experience gained either in a law firm or a comparable in-house role with expertise in one or more of the following specialisms:

  • Property/real estate (both commercial and residential) and/or housing development
  • Housing law
  • Commercial contracts and procurement
  • Social housing regulation

You must be adaptable with an ability to competently advise on areas outside of your immediate expertise. Whilst you will not be expected to be an expert in every legal query that you may be presented with, a diligent approach to advising on unfamiliar areas along with sound and pragmatic commercial judgement is essential to the role.
As growing team, we welcome enthusiastic candidates committed to the growth and success of the team with an openness towards new ideas and innovation.

Responsibilities

ABOUT THE ROLE

At Karbon Homes we build, manage and look after over 34,000 homes for people across the Northeast and Yorkshire, aiming to give our customers the strong foundations they need to get on in life.
As a charitable, not-for-profit registered provider of social housing every penny made through commercial activities is re-invested in supporting our core purpose. We work hard to balance a strong business head with a strong social heart, to make us successful, sustainable and values-driven.
Key to this mission is the provision of high-quality and timely legal advice to ensure the Group’s ambitions can be achieved, we remain well governed and viable and comply with our legal and regulatory obligations.
The Legal Services Team within our Governance Directorate is responsible for the provision of legal advice, representation, support and transactional legal services to Karbon Homes and its Group subsidiaries through a hybrid provision of in-house and externally procured legal services. Due to the continued expansion of the Group and need for on-hand expert advice, we are looking to expand our in-house legal team with the addition of a Legal Services Manager.

The legal work undertaken by the team is fast paced, interesting and varied, broadly covering the following areas of law:

  • Property law, both commercial and residential
  • Housing law/residential landlord and tenant
  • Development of new homes, construction and planning
  • Commercial contracts and public procurement
  • Governance, corporate, regulatory, charity law and information governance
  • Mergers, acquisitions and JVs (in a social housing context)
  • Finance and property securitisation
  • Employment and pensions
  • Litigation and dispute resolution
  • Legal department and panel firm management

The newly created Legal Service Manager role is an exciting opportunity to join a growing team within a dynamic and bold organisation where you can be assured your work will contribute to a strong social purpose aimed at improving the lives of the customers Karbon serves and the communities we work in. As a trusted in-house legal advisor your advice will be valued by colleagues and make a meaningful contribution to the success of the business.
You will be joining supportive and friendly colleagues where you will be encouraged to grow and develop your skills and knowledge as a lawyer in the areas of law relevant to the role. Regular training and CPD opportunities will be provided.
We hope you will be interested in joining us.

To be successful in the role you will have substantial experience gained either in a law firm or a comparable in-house role with expertise in one or more of the following specialisms:
