Responsibilities

YOUR ROLE

This is a unique opportunity to provide vital legal and administrative support to the Public Defenders chambers, enabling barristers to focus on complex criminal defence work. If you are organised, adaptable and committed to justice, this role puts you at the heart of meaningful legal work.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

As part of the Public Defenders chambers, you will provide essential administrative support to Public Defenders and the executive team, helping to ensure the smooth and efficient operation of chambers.
You will prepare legal documents, manage case data systems, coordinate Audio Visual Link (AVL) bookings, assist with court preparation, and support events such as legal education seminars and the annual criminal law conference.

You will also:

  • Manage the front desk, incoming calls, mail, deliveries and visitor access
  • Liaise with solicitors, clients and other stakeholders to ensure appropriate access to services
  • Assist with compiling, copying and organising briefs for court matters
  • Create and maintain accurate client records in the CASES database
  • Arrange travel bookings and process travel claims in line with departmental policy
  • Set up purchase orders, process invoices and follow up on payments
  • Provide basic IT support to staff, including ordering equipment and troubleshooting issues
  • Help update the Public Defenders website and onboard new users to internal systems
  • Prioritise and respond to urgent support requests in a high-pressure legal environment
  • Work as part of a small, professional and highly dedicated team committed to criminal justice and legal equity.
