JOB INFORMATION

Are you passionate about shaping public policy and contributing to the legal framework of the Northwest Territories? We are seeking a Legislative Counsel II to join our team in Yellowknife.
As Legislative Counsel II, you will provide legislative drafting services and legal counsel to both the Government of the Northwest Territories and the Legislative Assembly. Reporting to the Director of the Legislation Division, you take on clearly defined legislative assignments and carry them out under the guidance of the Director. Once assigned a file, you collaborate closely with client departments to gather drafting instructions, identify potential legal or policy issues, and develop practical legislative solutions. As you gain experience, your assignments will become increasingly complex and less routine, requiring a higher degree of independent judgment and initiative.
You are expected to manage most of your work independently, while ensuring that all legislation aligns with government priorities and contributes to a clear, consistent legal framework for the Northwest Territories. Your contributions are essential to the successful implementation of government policies and programs.

Knowledge Requirements:

  • Strong understanding of Canadian and Northwest Territories law
  • Awareness of Indigenous and northern issues
  • Familiarity with government policies and legislative processes

Key Qualifications:

  • Law Degree and membership in the Northwest Territories Bar; and
  • At least two years of relevant experience in doing either similar legislative work as contemplated, or of a type and breadth as to demonstrate competence in a government legislative counsel environment.
