GENERAL DESCRIPTION AND CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS

This position reports to the Legislation Services Director and interfaces with department managers and staff. Assists in the preparation of legislation and support documents in preparation for City Council agendas. Researches and reviews contracts for accuracy regarding legislative matters and disseminates as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of City government policies, practices and procedures. Knowledge of City legislative process. Knowledge of City organizational structure and key contacts within departments.
  • Microsoft Office skills Excel, Power Point, and organizational skills, DocuSign skills.
  • Ability to research legislative topics in variety of sources. Ability to develop contacts with other legislative policy makers within Georgia. Ability to interface with multiple levels within the departments and the Mayor’s Office. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely in timely manner.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration, business or related field (Additional years of experience may be considered as a substitute for the required degree on an exceptional basis, with a minimum of seven (7) years of professional related experience in public administration or paralegal).
  • Three (3) years’ of public administration or paralegal experience in the assigned role

PREFERRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration, business or related field with 5 years’ of public administration or paralegal experience.

LIFTING REQUIREMENTS:

Sedentary work : Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body.
Work Schedule :
This position follows the City’s hybrid work schedule policy as assigned by the Department of Human Resources Commissioner and requires in-person work at City work sites/facilities at least four (4) days per week, with the option to work remotely one (1) day per week, based on eligibility, departmental needs, and supervisor approval. The hybrid work schedule is subject to change at any time to five (5) days in-person work .

Responsibilities

  • Researches and reviews legislative issues for City Council, including but not limited to financial initiatives, and disseminates research findings orally and in writing.
  • Researches specific legislative issues for City Council. Plans, organizes and coordinates department legislation for committee process.
  • Analyzes legislative review forms for completeness, ensuring that adequate information is captured.
  • Proofreads committee agenda and full council report, and verifies amendments to Charter, code and other City documents.
  • Interacts with internal and external individuals and agencies regarding particular issues.
  • Maintain tracking system for legislation
  • Performs other duties as assigned
