Description:
A Level 2 Senior Network Engineer typically operates in an advanced technical capacity within a network engineering team. This role involves a combination of hands-on technical skills, troubleshooting expertise, and strategic problem-solving.
Core Responsibilities:
- Network Troubleshooting: Diagnose and resolve complex network issues, both internally and externally, often involving routers, switches, firewalls, and other network devices. This includes issues such as latency, packet loss, and connectivity failures.
- Network Design & Implementation: Collaborate with senior engineers or network architects to design and implement networks based on business needs, performance requirements, and future scalability.
- Security Management: Implement network security protocols and configurations to ensure the integrity of the network. This includes managing firewalls, VPNs, intrusion detection/prevention systems, and ensuring compliance with security standards.
- Advanced Configuration & Optimization: Perform advanced configurations on network devices, such as routing protocols (OSPF, BGP, EIGRP), VLANs, and quality of service (QoS) policies. Ensure that networks are operating at peak efficiency.
- Documentation & Reporting: Maintain detailed documentation for network configurations, topology, and troubleshooting guides. Provide reports on network performance and issues to management.
- Monitoring & Performance Tuning: Continuously monitor the network for performance issues, bottlenecks, or outages. Use network monitoring tools (e.g., SolarWinds, PRTG, etc.) to identify areas for improvement.
- Escalation Support: Provide escalation support to Level 1 engineers, guiding them in troubleshooting or advanced configurations. Act as a mentor and offer guidance to junior team members.
- Skills & Expertise:
- Routing & Switching: Expert knowledge of routing protocols (e.g., BGP, OSPF, RIP) and switching protocols (e.g., VLANs, STP, VTP).
- Network Security: Strong understanding of firewalls (e.g., Cisco ASA, Palo Alto), VPN technologies, and network security best practices.
- Wireless Technologies: Familiarity with wireless networking (Wi-Fi) standards, controllers, and troubleshooting.
- Cloud Networking: Understanding of cloud-based network architectures (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP) and hybrid cloud environments.
- Troubleshooting Tools: Proficiency in network diagnostic tools like Wireshark, ping, traceroute, NetFlow, and SNMP for troubleshooting and performance monitoring.
- Automation & Scripting: Familiarity with network automation tools (e.g., Ansible, Python) and configuration management platforms.
- Voice and Video Networks: Experience in configuring and troubleshooting VoIP, QoS for voice/video, and collaboration tools.
