Responsibilities

We require a Library Assistant to work in our network of libraries in Gateshead Libraries and Heritage Service. The contract is permanent and for 21 hours per week.
Library Assistants are appointed to the Library Service and could be asked to work in any of our 8 libraries. We anticipate that initially this post to be based at the Central Library, in Gateshead Archive.
You will engage with residents to use a range of library and heritage services, promote reading and the borrowing of books. You will regularly provide IT support and guidance to library users. The role involves a range of clerical and administrative duties, including taking payments and preparing new book stock. You will deal with customer enquiries and signpost on to other services as relevant. You will support the delivery of promotional library and heritage activities and events.
You will have knowledge of books and reading, and also have good basic ICT skills, including use of the internet and email. You will have experience of using libraries, of working with the public and of delivering a high level of customer care. You will have experience of communicating effectively with customers in order to understand and identify issues and of team working. You will have English and Maths GCSE at grade 4 or above (or equivalent) and good communication skills.
Some evening and weekend working may be required as we are open until 7pm on some weekday evenings and open 9am-1pm on Saturday.
