A Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) or Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) provides clinical assessment, diagnosis, and treatment for individuals, families, or groups dealing with mental, emotional, and behavioral issues. They develop tailored treatment plans, conduct therapy sessions, manage crises, and maintain patient records, often working in private practice, hospitals, or community health centers.  Key Responsibilities * Assessment & Diagnosis: Evaluate clients' mental and physical health, using interviews and tests to diagnose disorders. * Treatment Planning: Develop, implement, and review personalized treatment plans and goals. * Counseling Sessions: Conduct individual, group, or family therapy sessions using evidence-based approaches (e.g., CBT). * Crisis Intervention: Perform risk assessments for suicide or harm and provide immediate, stabilizing care. * Documentation: Maintain confidential, accurate, and up-to-date records of progress notes and treatment plans. * Coordination of Care: Collaborate with psychiatrists, social workers, and other professionals to ensure comprehensive treatment. * Referrals: Connect clients with community resources, such as support groups or specialized services.  Required Qualifications & Skills * Education: Master's degree in counseling, psychology, or a closely related field. * Licensure: State-specific licensure (e.g., LMHC, LPC, LPCC) which typically requires 2,000–4,000 hours of post-graduate supervised clinical experience and passing a state-recognized exam. * Skills: Active listening, empathy, strong communication, crisis management, and proficiency in electronic health record (EHR) systems.  Work Environment * Settings: Private practices, hospitals, outpatient clinics, schools, and community health centers. * Format: In-person and virtual (telehealth) sessions. * Schedule: Often includes evenings or weekends to accommodate client schedules.
