Your Opportunity:
The Stollery Emergency Department (ED) Mental Health (MH) Team is part of the Children, Youth, and Families, Addiction and Mental Health (CYF AMH) portfolio and is a specialty service within the Stollery ED. Reporting to the Care Manager or delegate, the MH Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) applies knowledge of developmental stages, critical thinking, problem solving, decision-making, and enhanced communication skills to provide care and support to children, youth, and their families who present to the Stollery Emergency Department with mental health as their primary concern. The care provided by the ED MH Nurse (LPN) must be concurrent-capable, family and patient-centered, trauma informed, and done in collaboration with the ED physician, Psychiatrist, and other care providers. As a member of the Stollery ED MH Team, the MH Nurse (LPN) demonstrates advanced skills in mental health risk assessment, risk management, non-violent crisis intervention, therapeutic engagement, safety planning and collaboration, and provides medical interventions as needed. Interventions and care must be evidenced based, trauma informed, and be provided from a strengths-based, recovery-oriented orientation. The MH Nurse requires in-depth knowledge of community resources and discharge planning for an effective and safe discharge from the ED. The MH Nurse works closely with the greater ED team, the CYFAMH Crisis Team, Stollery Urgent Clinic, other child and adolescent mental health care providers, and community partners such as Children’s Services, Family Supports to Children with Disabilities, Police, and School Personnel. This role requires knowledge of internal and external services and resources to engage in planning with families to best meet their needs.
