Description
Position Summary The LIDAR Analyst is responsible for acquiring, processing, and interpreting high-accuracy 3D laser scan data to support mechanical integrity inspections of aboveground storage tanks and pressure vessels. The role ensures that LiDAR-derived measurements meet the technical and documentation requirements of API 653 and API 510, enabling engineers and inspectors to assess deformation, settlement, and structural integrity. Responsibilities KEY TASKS & GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Field Data Acquisition Perform terrestrial LiDAR scanning of storage tanks (external and internal), pressure vessels and associated components. Plan scan setups to ensure full coverage of critical areas and minimal shadowing and data gaps Establish and verify control points where required Document field conditions and constraints Data Processing Register and align multiple scans into a unified point cloud Perform noise filtering, data cleaning, and segmentation (shell, roof, floor, nozzles) Validate registration accuracy and completeness Geometric Analysis & Interpretation Conduct deformation analysis including out-of-roundness, plumbness (tanks), settlement trends, and bulging or localized distortion. Fit geometric models (cylinders, planes, heads) for comparison Generate deviation maps and cross-sectional analysis API Code Alignment Support inspections in accordance with API 653 (tank settlement, shell distortion) and API 510 (vessel geometry and distortion) Collaborate with API-certified inspectors to interpret findings and identify code-relevant conditions Reporting & Deliverables Produce colorized deviation maps, annotated 3D models and quantitative measurement summaries Document methods used and accuracy and limitations Maintain traceable workflow from raw data to final report QA/QC Compliance Verify registration accuracy and data completeness Perform spot checks against known dimensions Ensure deliverables meet internal and client QA standards Other work duties as assigned. Requirements KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES: Proficiency in point cloud software (e.g., Cyclone, Scene, Cloud Compare) Ability to fit geometric models, perform deviation analysis, interpret deformation patterns Working knowledge of pressure vessel and tank geometry and settlement behavior Familiarity with requirements of (A-plus), API 653, API 510 Strong knowledge of NDE/NDT methods (UT, VT, etc.), industrial construction and maintenance Familiarity with spatial and geometric reasoning Attention to measurement accuracy and detail Ability to distinguish true deformation versus scan artifact Clear technical communication (visual + written) EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in Surveying, Geomatics, Engineering, or a related technical field or equivalent field experience in LiDAR or industrial inspection Minimum 8 years experience with LiDAR scanning systems (e.g., Leica, FARO) Experience supporting mechanical integrity programs preferred Benefits Competitive salary Medical, dental, vision, and supplemental insurance 401K Plan Paid Holidays Paid Time Off Working Conditions WORKING CONDITIONS: Primarily office-based with frequent interaction with digital systems and data platforms. Occasional travel to field sites, plants, or client locations to support inspections and data validation. May require extended hours during critical project phases or data reporting deadlines. Collaboration across multiple departments and time zones may be required. PHYSICAL JOB REQUIREMENTS & DEMANDS: Prolonged periods of sitting and working at a computer. Ability to travel to industrial sites and navigate environments such as plants, refineries, or construction sites. May require the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) when visiting field locations. Occasional lifting of light equipment (e.g., laptops, inspection tools) up to 20 lbs.
