The employee will demonstrate the ability to manage time, maintain a safe and clean environment; practice confidentiality; treat all persons with respect and professional courtesy; accept change; accept and provide constructive feedback; and work as a team player. The employee must also demonstrate the competencies for their position and adhere to policies and procedures of their department and the City of Rock Springs. JOB SUMMARY: Under general direction, the employee will utilize their knowledge skill, training, and abilities in lifeguarding, CPR, and related first aid skills to ensure the safety of people at an aquatic and athletic facility by preventing and responding to emergencies and providing assistance to staff in meeting the general needs of the department and the public. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The employee will perform a wide variety of duties including, but not limited to, the following: Monitoring of all activities in and near the water through consistent surveillance of patrons. Preventing injuries by minimizing or eliminating hazardous situations or behaviors. Enforcing facility rules and regulations and educating patrons about them. Recognizing and responding quickly and effectively to all emergencies. Administering immediate first aid and CPR, including using an automated external defibrillator (AED) Working as a team with other lifeguards, facility staff and management. Checking water chemistry in the pool(s) and spa(s). Answering the phone, assisting with customer needs; including running cash register and renewing memberships. Assisting in maintaining a clean environment in all required areas of the facility. Performing other duties and responsibilities as assigned. Qualifications ABILITIES AND REQUIREMENTS The employee has the necessary knowledge, skill, training and ability to: Demonstrate a working knowledge of water safety and first aid, and laws and regulations related to swimming pools. Effectively supervise a wide range of facility patrons. Conduct work in a safe manner in accordance with established policy. Effectively enforce pool rules and regulations. Communicate clearly concisely, and courteously, orally and in writing. Establish, maintain, and foster positive and harmonious working relationships with those contacted in the course of work. Treat others, including staff, patrons and the general public with courtesy and respect. EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING Experience: Entry Level License or Certificate: Possession of a current American Red Cross Lifeguard’s Certification Possession of current American Red Cross First Aid and CPR Certifications Physical demands Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment: Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, twist, swim 300 yards continuously, and lift 100 lbs.; exposure to heat, noise, hazardous materials, blood borne pathogens, outdoors, and potentially chemicals.
