Status: Part Time Department: Aquatics
Reports to: Aquatics Director
Schedule: Mornings 8am-12pm, and afternoons 12pm-4pm

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under the direction of the Aquatics Director and in accordance with the Christian mission and purpose of the Great Miami Valley (GMV) YMCA Association, the Lifeguard is responsible for the safety and well-being of all facility members and program participants in pool, whirlpool, sauna, steam room and locker areas.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Must have current CPR for Professional Rescuer, First Aid, and Y-Lifeguard certifications.
  • If hired with American Red Cross certification, YMCA Crossover is required within 90 days of employment.
  • Must be a minimum of 15 years of age.
  • Ability to establish and maintain harmonious relationships with staff, volunteers, members, and participants is essential.
  • Must have knowledge of emergency procedures and policies to promote safe, effective responses to emergency situations.
  • Must be able to hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment, including the water and anywhere around the zone of responsibility, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Must be able to see and observe all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Must be skilled in decision-making; ability to maintain focus for a prolonged period of time and remain alert with no lapses of consciousness.
  • Must promote the YMCA mission and apply core values, including customer service, meeting quality standards for service, and a maintaining safe environment for the enjoyment of all.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Physical ability to respond to children quickly in emergency: regular kneeling, bending, or sitting.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs.
  • Must be able to handle multiple tasks, work heavily with families and children.

Responsibilities:

  • Enforces all pool rules to promote a safe environment for all participants and members.
  • Rescue distressed persons, using rescue techniques and equipment.
  • Examines injured persons and administers First Aid or CPR, utilizing training, medical supplies, and equipment.
  • Activates Emergency Action Plan and contacts emergency medical services in case of serious injury.
  • Inspects equipment such as lane lines, lifeline, barbells, and chair lift for safety hazards, damage, or wear.
  • Take out/puts in equipment such as lane lines, lifeline, stairs and ladders as needed.
  • Maintains cleanliness of facility.
  • Files incident reports of any injury or rescue.
  • Cautions participants of unsafe behaviors.
  • Consistently responds to emergency preparedness drills, including but not limited to Red Ball Drills, Timmy Drops & silhouette drops.
  • Maintains current certifications at all times.
  • Able to maintain emotional control and composure in turbulent, challenging, and changing conditions.
  • Engages in active and healthy lifestyle to promote personal well-being and exemplifies all characteristics of active living.
  • Attends all required trainings, in-service meetings, and branch meetings (90% attendance required).
  • Provides excellent member experiences to all participants and members through classes and events.
  • Supports all branch and association-wide membership retention and engagement initiatives.
  • Actively supports membership sales initiatives.
  • Supports and promotes annual campaigns efforts within branch and across association.
  • Organizes special events for participants and families.
  • Covers all schedules shifts and/or finds substitute coverage for 100% of scheduled shifts.
  • Tests and records chemicals of all pools during allotted time frames within shifts. Report to director/coordinator if chemicals are out of safety range.
