The Summit YMCA, a branch of the Summit Area YMCA (SAY), is seeking lively Lifeguards to join our aquatics team and keep our Y family safe while at the pool. The Lifeguard maintains safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas. They create a safe and positive atmosphere that promotes member safety and engagement in accordance with Y policies and procedures.
Requirements:
- Must know how to swim and tread water.*
- Current certificate or ability to obtain American Red Cross or YMCA Lifeguard.*
- Current Certification or ability to obtain in Professional Rescuer CPR/AED and First Aid.
- Must obtain certification for Emergency Oxygen Administration, Asthma Inhaler and Epi-Pen Administration within first 6 months of employment.
- Must be a minimum of 15 years old

Responsibilities:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Maintains constant surveillance of the water, deck and pool areas at all times.
- Actively scans the pool to achieve a 10 x 10 reaction time.
- Knows, understands and consistently applies safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.
- Maintains a professional attitude and appearance, wearing the proper uniform/equipment for each shift.
- Maintains effective relationships with the members, participants, and other staff.
- Gives 100% attention to the patrons and operation of the pool area. Is alert, vigilant and conscientious.
- Maintains current certifications (Lifeguard, CPR-PR, First-Aid)
- Knows/reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with Y policies and procedures. Completes related reports as required.
- Knows all Aquatic Department policies and procedures and adheres to them.
- Helps in maintaining pool area, including testing (chlorine and pH readings), cleaning, equipment and chemicals and completes all appropriate forms (accident report, fecal/vomitus report) thoroughly and legibly and in a timely manner.
- Performs equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.
- Checks the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving.
- Stays in good physical condition to properly perform as a lifeguard.
- Attends all scheduled meetings, trainings and events.
- Completes other duties as assigned.
- As an Ambassador for the Y, communicates to members, volunteers, and the general public that the Y is the nation’s leading non-profit committed to strengthening the community through Youth Development, Healthy Living and Social Responsibility.

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The Lifeguard must be able to pass lifeguard water test, remain alert, sit or stand for extended periods, have adequate ability to hear noises and distinguish distress signals in the pool area. They must be able to continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear vision, perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue, to communicate verbally, including projecting their voice across distance in normal and loud situations. They also must be able to lift handicap stairs in and out of the pool with or without assistance. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; reach with hands or arms; lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee may be required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; and talk or hear.
- Swim skills necessary include the ability to complete 300 yards (12 lengths) of continuous swimming using front crawl or breaststroke, tread water for 2 min using only legs, and retrieve a 10-lb dive weight from 7 ft deep, surface and swim 20 yds with the weight, using legs only and exit the pool without using a ladder within 100 seconds
