JOB SUMMARY AND DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE WORK: The Lifeguard at the Greenbelt Aquatic & Fitness Center is responsible for overseeing the safety of pool patrons while swimming and utilizing the pool area. Lifeguards maintain order, enforce rules, respond to emergencies, and assist with facility upkeep to ensure a safe and clean swimming environment.   ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable an individual with disabilities to perform the essential functions.   * Supervise the safety and wellbeing of all facility patrons. * Maintain order and enforce established swimming pool rules and regulations in an appropriate manner. * Warn bathers of unseen hazards and eliminate hazards when possible. * Restrict swimmers to certain boundaries as it pertains to their ability. * Provide aid to swimmers in need and administer first aid when necessary. * Assist pool managers and aquatic coordinators with daily housekeeping tasks, including cleaning pool decks, gutters, drains, and scum lines; policing pool areas; and vacuuming pools. * Keep uniforms in good repair and maintain a well-groomed professional appearance. * Perform other related duties as assigned. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: Education and Experience: * Must be at least 16 years old or older. * Current certifications in American Red Cross courses: Lifeguard Training, First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, and Automated External Defibrillation (AED). * Pre-employment/employment testing of lifeguarding skills and knowledge, including but not limited to: * Swim 500 yards non-stop. * Ability to tread water for 2 minutes without hands. * Back-boarding skills. * Swim 20 yards, retrieve a 10lb brick from the bottom, and return within 1 minute and 30 seconds. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed indoors and outdoors at the Greenbelt Aquatic & Fitness Center, in and around swimming pools and mechanical areas. Work requires exposure to water, chemicals, noise, and varying weather conditions. Evening, weekend, and holiday hours may be required.
