Job Title: Lifeguards and Swim Instructors
Location: We will operate two indoor pools in 2025-26, located at our Fox Point and South Side branches in Providence. (Our Wanskuck Branch, including the pool, will be closed for major renovations in 2025-2026.)
Reports to: Aquatics Manager
Payrate: $17 - $18/hour, depending on experience
Schedule: We have openings for school-year Lifeguards and Swim Instructors. School-year schedule: 10-20 hours/week, through June. School-year swim programs include afterschool swims or lessons, Lifeguarding for Swim Team practices and meets (including some weekday evening and weekend shifts available), and pool rentals. Current Lifeguard certification (through American Red Cross or equivalent) is required for both lifeguarding and teaching swim lessons. A swim test is also required.
General Description: Lifeguards are responsible for ensuring the safety of aquatics participants by preventing and responding to emergencies.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Current Lifeguarding certification through American Red Cross or equivalent (and must be able to provide evidence of current certification).
• Current certification in First Aid, and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer (and must be able to provide evidence of certification).
• Minimum of 1 year of Lifeguarding experience (required for both Lifeguards and Swim Instructors).
• Must be at least 16 years old (age 18+ preferred).
• Must obtain required pre-employment clearances, including (but not limited to): national, state, and local criminal records background checks; continuous criminal records watch while employed by BGCP; RI and applicable out-of-state background checks for child abuse or sex offender records; drug screen (for illegal drugs); employment verifications; reference checks

• Recognize and respond quickly and effectively in emergencies.
• Enforce all aquatic facility policies, rules and regulations.
• Help advance the organization’s safety culture by strict adherence to safety policies and procedures, and by discussing any safety-related questions and challenges with your supervisor.
• Inspect the facility on a daily schedule and report any unsafe conditions or equipment to the supervisor.
• Complete records and reports as required (attendance, incident reports, skills progression, etc.)
• Complete required pre-employment trainings.
• Participate in regular in-service trainings.
• Maintain fitness level (swimming skills, strength and endurance).
• Assist supervisor with pool maintenance as needed.
• Complete additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.
• Teach swimming techniques to school-age children and teens.
• Provide a safe and fun learning environment for students.
• Instruct students on proper swimming techniques and safety rules.
• Enforce pool rules and regulations.
• Conduct swim safety tests and evaluate students’ abilities.
• Follow BGCP employment policies and procedures, and Operations & Safety policies and procedures (pre-employment trainings required).
